As an Assistant County Attorney Litigation and Advisory Attorney with Multnomah Countys Office of the County Attorney you will be a part of the Countys inhouse legal team.
As a litigation generalist you will represent the County in all aspects of litigation from initial case analysis responsive pleadings discovery motion practice and trial and appeals in the courts and before administrative tribunals. Areas of case work will include torts federal civil rights actions employment actions contract actions property tax appeals and other matters in which the County or its officers employees or agents are parties.
Additional duties as assigned include public meetings restrictions on political campaigning sustainability environmental regulations and all other aspects of County governance.
The successful candidate will be flexible and utilize problem solving and innovation to provide creative options to help clients achieve their goals. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to represent the County in a variety ofcomplex legal areas with minimal direction and supervision. The position requires the highest quality legal work a strong work ethic the ability to work as an effective member of a legal team and intellectual curiosity.

Minimum Qualifications (required):
Law degree from an accredited college or university;
Four 4 years of litigation and trial experience;
Current membership of Oregon State Bar and ability to be admitted to practice in Oregon State Court; certified to practice in U.S. District Courts for the State of Oregon and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; and
Ability to pass a professional reference check.
Preferred Qualifications/Transferable Skills*: You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Please clearly explain on your application how you meet any of the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills.
Experience with public sector and municipal law highlighting any particular experience with advising government agencies or working as inhouse counsel for government entities. Experience working in a high volume environment or working with clients who work in a high volume environment.
Experience prosecuting or defending civil claims in Oregon state and federal courts with emphasis on cases involving constitutional and civil rights claims federal and state employment claims contract claims tort claims including professional liability property tax appeals and all other claims involving state or local government.

Serving the Public Even During Disasters:
Everyday Multnomah County staff work together to serve as a safety net for our communities. During a disaster this safety net becomes even more critical. All County employees have a role in serving the public during inclement weather natural disaster or other types of community emergency response. During these emergency responses while typically there begins with a call for volunteers county employees may ultimately be reassigned from their current position to a role in the emergency response in order to support the critical needs presented by our communities. This position is classified as an Unclassified Executive position and serves at the pleasure of the County Attorney and may be subject to discharge at any time.
This is a salaried executive position that is not eligible for overtime.
This position is approved for a hybrid schedule. The onsite work location is at the Multnomah Building 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd Portland OR 97214.
All employees must reside in Oregon or Washington; the county cannot support ongoing telework from other locations.
This recruitment may be used to fill fulltime parttime temporary limited duration and oncall positions.
