CFF LAB:
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundations oneofakind CF research facility located in Lexington MA bridges the gap between discoveries made at academic institutions and the development of new therapies by the biotech and pharmaceutical industry. The Labs mission is to facilitate and expedite the discovery of that could correct or improve the function of the defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. Since it first opened in 2012 the vision for the lab has evolved together with the science and with the transformative CF treatments becoming available; the current focus is on developing novel CF treatments especially for those with rare and nonsense genetic variants who cannot be treated with CFTR modulators. Additionally the lab is concentrating research on enabling genetic therapies that would ultimately offer the best hope for a cure for CF for everyone regardless of the CFcausing genetic variant.
COOP PROGRAM SUMMARY:
This research experience will focus on learning how scientific discovery data can be translated to treatment of disease. Students will join the Bioinformatics team in the Laboratory and carry out an independent research project and may assist with ongoing projects. The purpose of the coop term will be to: 1 immerse students in areas of biomedical science not readily accessible on undergraduate campuses 2 provide an opportunity for firsthand knowledge of how new data are obtained and interpreted 3 experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity and gain a more realistic view of the opportunities and demands of a professional research career 4 allow students to gain an indepth understanding of cystic fibrosis (CF) and the rapidly advancing therapeutic landscape for CF.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Works under supervision on projects conducted within the Bioinformatics team. Will gain handson experience in a variety of basic and stateoftheart software and data tools in order to work closely with the Bioinformatics team members on computational capabilities databases software tools and solutions for organizing analyzing and integrating internal and/or public experimental data in particular Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and genetic variant data. Will learn to analyze data and be able to present findings to supervisor. Can expect to prepare and present a 15minute PowerPoint presentation in an internal group setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct computational analysis of experimental data.
Troubleshoot and understand experimental activities.
Develop and maintain computational solutions scripts software tools and computational pipelines.
Perform analysis of lab results for discussion with supervisor.
Maintain detailed records of the work conducted (electronic lab notebook).
Collate results in preparation for internal meetings.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Active student in a degreed college or university Bioinformatics/Life Sciences program.
Excellent attention to detail.
Excellent communication collaboration problem solving skills.
Detailoriented and capable of multitasking in a dynamic team.
Familiarity with computer programming ability to write short programs or scripts independently.
Coursework in computer science/bioinformatics and in biological disciplines (genetics molecular biology).
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Director II Facilities and Operations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Commute to lab every workday. Must have access to reliable transportation.
Supervised work at the Lab.
Sitting bending reaching and walking.

COMPENSATION:
This paid internship opportunity offers a pay rate of $25.00 per hour.
