TITLE:Middle School Mentoring & Community Involvement Coordinator

LOCATION: Urbana MiddleSchool

SUPERVISOR: Director of Mentoring and Community Involvement and Building Principal

JOB SUMMARY: The UMSMentoring & Community Involvement Coordinator collaborates with community groups and school personnel to implement and expand schoolbased mentoring. He/she serves as the liaison between community groups and business partners. The Mentoring & Community Involvement Coordinator provides ongoing support and maintains accurate records for all UMSmentors tutors and other volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

CU OnetoOne Mentor Program and other mentor programs

Recruitment

  • Maintain and provide needed updates to the database on current CU onetoone mentors.
  • Work with other mentor program staff to promote the CU OnetoOne Mentor Program in the community and school
  • Work with other mentor program staff to recruit new mentors.

Site Development

  • Educate school staff about the parameters and goals of the CU OnetoOne Mentoring program
  • Coordinate mentoring with other support services
  • Assist teachers with appropriate communication with mentors

Screening and Orientation

  • Check references and conduct interviews for mentor applicants.
  • Provide onsite orientation for mentors new to UHS.

Student Selection and Matching

  • Compile and maintain a list of potential students to be matched with a mentor.
  • Secure parental permission for offcampus mentor/mentee meetings
  • When appropriate match or rematch students with a mentor.

Ongoing Support and Supervision

  • Communicate regularly with mentors for information and support
  • Maintain accurate contact information on file for each mentor.
  • Provide additional support and information for mentors.
  • Provide match intervention if necessary.
  • Work with the Mentor Project Director to facilitate transfer of student/mentor pair to new school site if applicable.
  • Compile signin sheet hours and report totals to the Project Director quarterly.

Participant Appreciation

  • Coordinate sitespecific thankyous for volunteers.
  • Assist in yearend celebration activities/banquets

Evaluation

  • Assist in the evaluation of mentor programs by assuring that forms are filled out promptly as requested.

Community Partnership Development

  • Identify potential community partners for UHS as a whole or for individual classes or departments
  • Facilitate formation and ongoing support of partnerships

Other Volunteer/Community Involvement (to be negotiated with school staff)

  • Act as the school liaison for the University of Illinois Volunteers.
  • Provide screening and orientation for tutors and other volunteers
  • Maintain accurate contact information for each classroom volunteer and tutor
  • Compile signin sheet hours and report totals to program coordinator and building principal.
  • Act as the liaison between volunteers and UHS staff.
  • Facilitate periodic recognition/thankyou for v

Other Duties

  • Attend monthly crossdistrict meetings of Community Involvement/Mentor Coordinators

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree or a minimum of 30 hours of college credit
  • Knowledge and ability to work with community and local businesses.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with diverse populations.
  • Solid computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office and Excel.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Paid for 20hours perweek
  • The position is five days per week on student attendance days

  • Pay rate is $20.14/hour
  • This is a position not within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
  • This is a nonexempt position.

EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on the evaluation of personnel.
