Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Education in the College of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a parttime Clinical Assistant Professor (HS) or Assistant Professor / Director of the John Conley Division of Medical Ethics & Humanities.

This will be a parttime faculty position at the Assistant Professor or Clinical Assistant Professor level. The Division is responsible for increasing awareness around emerging bioethical challenges in healthcare. Its mission is to foster an environment that provides leadership in education scholarship community engagement research and ethics support services to advance health equity and socially responsible fair and compassionate health care.

The successful candidate should have bioethics expertise leadership experience and capabilities to create an interdisciplinary instructional program involving faculty from ethics law clinical research and other relevant fields. The candidate will play a pivotal role in developing and updating curricula training programs and practicum opportunities to build bioethics expertise among students residents and fellows and faculty.

The Director will have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead the refinement and implementation of Bioethics Pathway which is a paracurricular program that prepares medical students to be transformational leaders in bioethics and medical ethics.
  • Design curricula to train professionals from various backgrounds (physicians researchers ethicists policymakers etc. in bioethics related to biomedical/clinical research.
  • Develop core courses and practicum experiences that focus on ethical principles guidelines and responsible conduct of research.
  • Ensure curricula cover critical areas like cultural differences vulnerable populations informed consent study design ethics conflicts of interest etc.
  • Mentor faculty to teach bioethics and medical ethics in programs.
  • Participate in teaching within the College of Medicine.
  • Shaping and overseeing the divisions research and educational portfolios in bioethics.
  • Share their research expertise to engage intellectually with the University community. This could include public lectures arranging symposia hosting visiting scholars leading faculty reading groups serving as a guest lecturer in a class etc.
  • Assist in developing and updating institutional policies to ensure compliance with ethical standards state and federal regulations.
  • We especially welcome faculty who bring an equity lens to their scholarship and teaching and who demonstrate a record of successful collaboration.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree such as an M.D. Ph.D. J.D. or equivalent in a field related to bioethics or medical ethics.
  • A distinguished record of scholarship and be an accomplished teacher and leader in an area related to bioethics.
  • Strong administrative and interpersonal skills to manage the division effectively.
  • Proven ability to mentor faculty in the bioethics division.
