Preferred Qualifications

JOB SUMMARY: Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process in providing nursing care to patients in all settings in collaboration with other health care providers. The RN is accountable for his/her own professional development and practice within the scope of care defined by law. Utilizing organizational resources the RN acts as a patient advocate for the delivery of safe care including delegation of care and participation in performance and practice improvement activities. The delivery of nursing care within the Kettering Health Network reflects the mission vision values and philosophies of the organization and nursing departments.

The Registered Nurse reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.

The Oncology Clinic RN provides quality nursing care to patients experiencing hematological/oncological/gynecological treatments and disease management including knowledge and skills to provide chemotherapy and biotherapy agents safely and effectively. Possesses and develops understanding of the oncologic process and oncologic emergencies. Knowledgeable to instruct patients and their support persons about disease symptom management and treatments as well as advocate for their needs.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages patient care in the oncology/infusion/clinic area which includes but is not limited to:
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance to Oncology Nursing Society (ONS)

Chemotherapy/Biotherapy guidelines and able to administer these agents in accordance with ONS guidelines

  • Follows KHN policy and procedures for chemotherapy administration and follows safety practices for patients visitors and self
  • Responsible for knowledge of /chemotherapy/biotherapy treatments and procedures provided
  • Evaluate and initiate IV access central line management and assessment of port function
  • Ongoing patient assessment prior to during and following administration of treatment
  • Able to ascertain patient symptoms in relation patients regimen and other oncologic modalities of treatment
  • Able to assess and recognize oncologic emergencies and intervene appropriately
  • Serve as an advocate for patients and their families in relation to their cancer treatment & diagnosis. Able to interact appropriately with patients and families who are in times of crisis
  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with staff members of the interdisciplinary team. Responds to patients requests/needs timely and effectively. Documents all patient contact within the EMR
  • Able to utilize the oncology Electronic Medical Record (EMR) for all charting charging retrieval or orders scheduling ect

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Licensed in the state of Ohio as a Registered Nurse
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (NLN or CCNE) if they are a new graduate nurse. New graduates from nonaccredited programs may be considered if they had a clinical rotation at a network hospital
  • Bachelor of Science in nursing preferred (must be completed within 5 years of hire). If hired after June of 2010 at KMCS all other KHN facilities after Jan 2011
  • ONS chemotherapy and Biotherapy administration certification (or obtained within 6 months of hire)
  • OCN certification highly preferred

Experience:

  • At least one year of oncology nursing experience required with preference given to RNs with oncology clinic experience. Experience with oncology EMR preferred

Licensure Certifications Registrations:

  • BLS certification
  • ACLS NRP PALS as determined by unit scope of practice

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Maintains a highly professional and positive attitude and behavior towards patients families and staff
  • Inputs retrieves and interprets data from patient charts (EMR) in a timely manner
  • Follows up promptly on patient concerns and questions
  • Instructs patients and families regarding medications treatment plans and aftercare instructions
  • Provides a calm and understanding environment in which the patient can receive cancer treatment resulting in a positive experience
  • Prioritize duties and utilizes time in an efficient manner completing all assigned duties; assisting peers in times of high census and able to work effectively as a team putting patients priorities as highest priority; demonstrates flexibility and dependability as a team member of Kettering Cancer Care
  • Understands scope of requirements of being a registered nurse within the State of Ohio and practices nursing within the scope of practice outlined in Chapter 4723 of the Ohio Revised Code
  • Participates in continuing education/nursing activities both within the KHN and outside the network (i.e state and local chapters of ONS) in order to stay current with oncology practices
  • A nurse who is returning to the acute care setting after five or more years may be required to provide evidence of successful completion of a refresher course
