In addition the ideal candidate will possess the following attributes and experience: Experience devising and implementing sophisticated cultivation and solicitation strategies required. Experience working with major gift donors and volunteers strongly preferred. Excellent communication and writing skills required; and experience writing fundraising materials required. High level volunteer engagement and management aptitude strongly preferred. A history of growth in an organization and the ability to be a longterm valueadded member of the Massachusetts General Hospitals Development team. Proven experience within a complex institution preferably an academic medical center or university. Proven ability to motivate engage and work collaboratively and collegially at all levels with prospects donors volunteers leadership and senior members of the medical staff or similar constituencies. Ability to think strategically and manage multiple projects effectively evaluate problems and display sound confidential judgment. An even disposition and the ability to deal effectively and politely with people from all types of backgrounds and experiences in all types of situations. High degree of professionalism and the ability to listen carefully as well as to influence and persuade others. Familiarity with privacyrelated rules and regulations is important and the ability and interest to operate in an environment with strict privacy and confidentiality rules a must. Familiarity with the goals and objectives of the Massachusetts General Hospital and Partners HealthCare. A professional and considerate demeanor and have a strong work ethic. Be honest trustworthy and abide by strict confidentiality guidelines. Be highly organized detail oriented and efficient. Be entrepreneurial collaborative conscientious and resultsoriented. Position Overview
The Senior Director of Development is a highlevel fundraising position within the Mass General Development Office. Reporting to a Senior Managing Director the Senior Director oversees and is accountable for all fundraising efforts aimed at achieving goals for Mass Generals Research Institute and its programs. The Senior Director partners with the Senior Vice President for Research The Chair of the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) the Scientific Director of the Research Institute hospital leadership and administration medical and research staff colleagues and members of the Research Advisory Council to achieve specific fundraising goals.The Senior Director is an ambassador of the office and is empowered to represent development at the hospital. The Senior Director follows and enforces officewide and hospital policies and works collaboratively with his or her peers to solve problems and challenges which may extend outside his or her defined area of responsibility.The Senior Director manages two direct reports and is responsible for an assigned budget.The ideal candidate will be a collegial team player with a proven ability to motivate engage and work collaboratively at all levels with prospects donors volunteers leadership and senior members of the research and medical staff or similar constituencies. Provide significant oversight and management of the fundraising activities for the Research Institute and its programs. Oversee the fundraising progress toward individual and team goals and work toward the successful attainment of those goals according to an approved development plan. Work with multiple highlevel stakeholders to develop cross disciplinary big ideas and close transformational gifts for Institute and related programs. Collaborate with colleagues across teams to achieve program and fundraising goals. Actively manage a portfolio of about 135 prospects and donors (generally capable of making gifts of $500K or more) to build and maintain a prospect and donor base for the Research Institute and its programs. Work with prospects to develop and enhance their relationship to and connection with the hospital ultimately leveraging that relationship to maximize philanthropic giving. Set and implement complex strategic activities/collateral for a fundraising program and assess their effectiveness. Create and maintain a menu of giving opportunities for research and write case statements and proposals as necessary. Create maintain and strengthen relationships with Partners and Hospital leadership volunteer leaders chiefs/physicians researchers and administrative directors. Serve as the primary Development Office liaison to the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) and maintain effective and collaborative working relationship with Partners Innovation Office and Partners Office of Research Management. Set management and recruitment strategy for volunteer groups councils and committees for the Research Institute and manage their philanthropic activities. Provide strategy and oversight of Development events for the Research Institute in collaboration with Development Special Events. Oversee the Scientific Speakers Workshop series as a strategy to engage principal gift level prospects and donors (both individual and industry) and to prepare MGH scientists for outward facing roles. Provide active management and leadership to direct reports (currently two employees). Participate in the programs budget preparations and work within the approved budget. Advise on matters of policy.
