    Office of Pupil Transportation
    (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)
    The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Per Diem Transportation Inspector in the Office of Pupil Transportation.

    This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that if you are the successful candidate for this position you will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date you will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.


    DEFINITION: Under direction does work involved in seeing that taxicabs buses limousines and/or parking lot proprietors comply with various codes and regulations governing their operations; does other related duties as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

    1. Appointees will be required to possess a drivers license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
    2. Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
    3. Five 5 years or more of School Bus Driving experience. preferred

    BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Makes field inspections on taxicabs buses limousines and/or other passenger vehicles to ensure that they comply with prescribed codes/ordinances/regulations.
    2. May license or register license applicants taking background and driving histories.
    3. Make field inspections on parking lots to ensure that they comply with prescribed codes/regulations governing hours of operations rates charged and so forth.
    4. Makes physical inspections of taxicabs buses limousines and/or other passenger vehicles to ensure cleanliness and general safety of vehicles and may report on areas of needed repairs.
    5. Investigates complaints by the public against drivers who violate various codes/regulations governing the operation of vehicles.
    6. Evaluates whether complaints warrant legal action or warning issuance.
    7. Implements complaint record filing as well as copies of reports/summonses.
    8. Issues summonses and may testify in court and/or at related hearings as to violations recorded.
    9. Prepares clear sound accurate and informative reports regarding various vehicle inspections.
    10. Observes vehicles along route to ensure that service is provided according to schedule.
    11. Makes recommendations for changes in service such as need for additional buses route changes and revised schedules to improve service to the public.
    12. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency office or related units.
    13. Visits of various routes to monitor loading/unloading of children on and off of vendor school buses and NPS school buses.
    14. Ensuring that vendor school buses meet state and federal required safety standard.
    15. Ensuring that vendor personnel meet state and federal driving and training requirements.
    16. Conducting scheduled and unscheduled stop visits to routes and other drop off locations and submit monthly reports of findings.
    17. Conducting safety check of bus stops to determine if stop is hazardous.
    18. Documenting deficiencies and noncompliance to notify supervisor of violations so investigation and/or informant action can be executed.

    KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

    1. Ability to prepare clear accurate reports.
    2. Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
    3. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency office or related units.
    4. Ability to read write speak understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
    5. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship such persons may not be eligible.
    6. Knowledge of provisions of the State Motor Vehicle Code and applicable laws to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students and in the training of school bus drivers.
    7. Knowledge of NJDOE and NJDOT laws rules and regulations related to assigned activities.
    8. Knowledge of NJDOE and NJDOT regulations regarding contracting pupil transportation services.
    9. Interpersonal skills using tact patience and courtesy.
    10. Ability to observe and communicate safe driving practices and methods.
    11. Knowledge of provisions of the State Motor Vehicle Code and applicable laws to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students and in the training of school bus drivers
    12. Ability to communicate principle methods and procedures related to a large pupil transportation system.
    13. Knowledge of NJDOE and NJDOT laws rules and regulations related to assigned activities.
    14. Knowledge of NJDOE and NJDOT regulations regarding contracting pupil transportation services.
    15. Interpersonal skills using tact patience and courtesy.
    16. Ability to review routes from the field for efficiency and provide recommendations for improvements.
    17. Ability to interact with students the public school bus related personnel and other district and Commission employees daily.
    18. Ability to professionally diffuse situations that may be hostile.
    19. Ability to thoroughly investigate complaints problem solve and suggest solutions.
    20. Ability to assist Supervisor with safety related trainings for Omnibus Operators.
    21. Ability to train assigned personnel.
    22. Ability to help supervisor and Transportation Inspector coordinate repairs to district vehicles with Maintenance Vendor.
    23. Ability to report to scenes of school bus accidents and conduct field investigations of vehicular accidents involving school buses.
    24. Ability to conduct field investigations when complaints are logged against contracted school bus companies that provide transportation to district students.
    25. Ability to observe and communicate safe driving practices and methods.
    26. Ability to communicate principle methods and procedures related to a large pupil transportation system.

    SALARY EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION

    1. Salary: The hourly range for this position is $ 18.20 per hour
    2. Employment Period: Twelve 12 months
    3. Union Affiliation: Local 617
