IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE LINN COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF APPLICATION PROCESS:
The Linn County Sheriffs Office has a lateral transfer program for certified law enforcement peace officers. This program includes a $10000 structured incentive and a starting salary based on years of service as a certified peace officer. The following documents are REQUIRED and must be uploaded with an application:- Current Photograph
- Birth Certificate
- Transcripts from ALL high school and posthigh school educational institutions
- Military Release (if applicable)
In addition to submitting an application all applicants MUST attend the Linn County Civil Service Commission physical fitness and written exams as indicated below.

All applicants MUST have their valid drivers license and social security card with them at the time of the testing.The physical fitness exam will be given prior to the written exam. Be sure to wear clothing that is appropriate (gym clothes tennis shoes etc. for physical fitness. You must pass all three sections of the physical fitness standards to be eligible to take the written exam.

- Enforces the ordinances of the County and all other pertinent local State and Federal laws.
- Patrols an assigned area checking doors and windows and examines premises of unoccupied buildings or residences to detect any suspicious conditions in a motorized police vehicle.
- Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints and makes arrests of persons who violate the laws.
- Makes traffic arrests and gives violation tickets to those who break traffic laws.
- Aids motorists.
- Investigates traffic accidents.
- Assists in cases of fires accidents rescues hazardous materials and disorders in assigned area as directed.
- Restores order regulates traffic and prepares necessary reports.
- Conducts investigations of serious crimes and accidental deaths.
- Preserves the scene of the crime interviews victims witnesses and suspects.
- Followsup leads and presents cases to County Attorneys office.
- Serves warrants subpoenas and legal papers.
- Handles and supervises evictions performs repossessions and places liens as necessary.
- Performs the duties of a jailer including booking and processing prisoners fingerprinting and photographing prisoners and screening visitors.
- Oversees the care and custody of prisoners and mental health patients escorts prisoners from jail to courthouse hospitals or other institutions.
- Appears in court as arresting officer.
- Assists on medical calls with CPR and basic first aid.
- Maintains records and prepares reports.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
- Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the Voice of the Customer and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR IOWA LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
To qualify for the position of Deputy Sheriff with Linn County you must meet the following requirements:- U.S. citizenship and a resident of Iowa upon employment
- Age 18 or older and have not reached your 60th birthday at the time of appointment
- Current Iowa drivers license or the ability to obtain one before the date of hire
- Ability to read and write the English language
- High school diploma or GED
- Good physical mental and emotional condition as determined by a physician; pass drug screening test
- Uncorrected vision of not worse than20/100 in either eye correctable to 20/20 and normal color vision
- Normal hearing in each ear
- Not be addicted to or alcohol be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation and have not been convicted of a felony
- Not by reason of conscience or belief be opposed to the use of force when appropriate or necessary to fulfill duties
