Special Education Coordinator
The job of Special Education Coordinator is done for the purpose/s of administering processes programs and/or projects; coordinating program components support needs and materials; assisting with services for outofdistrict students with disabilities; training and assisting district staff in special education processes; mentoring newtodistrict special education staff; mentoring staff on Exception Authorizations; special education collaborating with district staff school psychologists other districts and outside agencies; monitoring and assisting with transition programming for students; assisting with personnel functions; and serving as department liaison.
This Job reports to the Director of Special Services
Administers processes programs and/or projects (e.g. special education evaluations student counts manifestation determinations staff development activities etc. for the purpose of developing implementing and delivering needsbased staff professional development providing input support and assistance; ensuring program accountability data collection and analysis; carrying out and achieving objectives within area of responsibility.
Assists with services for outofdistrict students with disabilities (e.g. developing proposals new programs analyzing staffing issues etc. for the purpose of managing budget providing grant oversight and meeting district goals.
Assists with personnel functions (e.g. recruitment hiring supervision evaluation of select special education staff etc. for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing enhancing productivity of personnel and ensuring objectives of Special Education programs are achieved within budget.
Collaborates effectively with district staff other districts and outside agencies concerning aspects of educating students with disabilities (e.g. consultation intervention techniques etc. for the purpose of implementing and maintaining quality services and programs to support students and staff.
Collaborates with school psychologists for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and/or programs and conveying or gathering information.
Coordinates program components support needs and materials for the purpose of identifying staffing levels for school special education programs and delivering services in conformance with established guidelines with fiscal efficiency.
Facilitates meetings and processes for the purpose of implementing and maintaining programs and services to achieve the districts desired objectives.
Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records for the purpose of providing current and historical reference and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
Monitors and assists with transition programming for students (e.g. student referrals placements to transition programs/services etc. for the purpose of reviewing and evaluating documents Individual Education and Behavior plans; serving as a liaison to parents/guardians; providing information and/or resolving issues; and ensuring adherence to district procedures state rules and federal regulations.
Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. reports student activities correspondence etc. for the purpose of documenting activities providing written reference and/or conveying information.
Researches a variety of topics (e.g. special education issues/trends/methods policies education codes etc. for the purpose of maintaining skills/knowledge serving as a resource providing information and/or recommendations and/or addressing a variety of program requirements.
Responds to a variety of concerns (e.g. staff policy/regulation conflicts parents community etc. for the purpose of identifying relevant issues and recommending resolutions.
Serves as a department liaison to schools for the purpose of representing the Special Services department; collaborating with coaching and educating special education teams; and developing appropriate opportunities for students with disabilities.
Trains and assists district staff for the purpose of ensuring familiarity with district state and federal special education processes procedures rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; facilitating meetings; communicating effectively orally and in writing; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; analyzing data; applying curriculum and instructional techniques; classifying data and/or information; counseling and mentoring employees; enforcing rules and regulations; estimating required resources; and interviewing techniques and practices.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math including calculations using fractions percents and/or ratios; read technical information compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledgebased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: behavior patterns of learningdisabled children; codes laws rules regulations and policies including Special Education requirements; knowledge of community resources; methods of instruction and training; methods of adult learning; practices of personnel administration; and school safety and security practices.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities meetings and/or events; often gather collate and/or classify data; and use basic jobrelated equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of jobrelated equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilitybased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: meeting deadlines and schedules; managing multiple projects; adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; setting priorities; building and maintaining collaborative relationships; maintaining confidentiality; and working with frequent interruptions.
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; directing the use of budgeted funds within a work unit. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the jobs functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organizations services.
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling some stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40 sitting 35 walking 25 standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.
Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required in Special Education with significant consecutive years and increasing levels of responsibility.
Education (Preferred): Masters in Special Education
Education:Bachelors degree in jobrelated area with an emphasis in Special Education.
