Description of Job

About the Work Unit
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has an opening for an Professional Engineer I with our Region 5 Traffic and Safety team in Durango. The Traffic and Safety team delivers capital traffic and safety engineering projects delivers maintenance projects provides traffic engineering review and support to the local agency and permits unit provides traffic engineering review and support for capital engineering projects and responds to traffic and safety related customer concerns

About the Position
This position is a fullyoperational licensed engineer applying engineering theories principles and standards to the delivery of traffic and safety capital engineering projects and maintenance projects.

Your duties and responsibilitieswill include but are not limited to the following:


Work Environment:
  • Your schedule will be primarily Monday Friday with opportunity for a flexible schedule.
  • After a training period you may work a hybrid schedule with a combination of inoffice and remote work.
  • Regular travel required during work hours for project related activities site visits meetings trainings and conference attendance.
  • Overnight travel throughout Colorado to projects throughout the Region and meetings.
  • Required to work outside in all weather conditions in close proximity to moving traffic and over variable terrain.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

OR

  • Current valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from another U.S. states Board of Licensure. If meeting qualifications with an outofstate PE license it would be a condition of employment to obtain your Colorado PE license within six months of hire.

  • A current valid drivers license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
  • If meeting qualifications with an outofstate PE license you must obtain your Colorado PE license within six months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
Theexceptional applicantwill possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section.
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity.
  • Knowledge of engineering processes theories laws principles conceptual models and best practices.
  • At least 35 years of knowledge and experience in civil or transportation engineering design and/or construction.
  • Knowledge of the National Environmental Policy Act Planning and Environmental Linkages and how these affect transportation construction projects.
  • Knowledge and experience with the CDOT Design Manual AASHTO Design Guides CDOT Planning and Environmental Linkages Manual CDOT Materials Manual CDOT Project Development Manual CDOT Standards & Specifications Manual CDOT M&S Standards CDOT Construction Manual MUTCD Public RightsofWay Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) and other industry design standards.
  • Ability to mentor train and lead nonprofessional staff.
  • Ability to oversee consultants and contractors.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments priorities and projects in a demanding environment.
  • Ability to work under tight budgets and deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments.
  • Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner.
  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with sensitivity to their needs priorities promises made and commitments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Strong time and project management skills including prioritization and multitasking ability.
  • Excellent reasoning investigative analytical and problemsolving ability.
  • Excellent facilitation presentation and communication skills both written and oral.

  • Experience with MicroStation and Open Roads programs.
