In 2023 George Hanley (Donor) established the Paul H. Benson Professorship in Sustainability at the University of Dayton with a commitment of funds to establish an endowment in support. This fund will support threeyear professorship terms for new or continuing tenure track faculty members with the aim to recruit or retain outstanding new talent and advance the Universitys ability to develop sustainability educational and research programs. With this gift George honors Paul Bensons 38year career as professor of philosophy and provost at the University.
The period of this appointment is three years and is nonrenewable. The appointment is a 9month position from August 16 2025 through May 15 2028 with a one threecredit course load reduction per year and additional funding to help cover support of academic research scholarship or creative activity goals in this position or travel expenses to support research presentations at professional conferences.

Selection Process
The professorship holder will be selected through a competitive process as determined by the Provosts Office in consultation with the Office of Human Resources. Eligible faculty from all academic unit are encouraged to submit an application for the professorship.
