Are you an accomplished industrial mechanic with expertise in maintaining troubleshooting and repairing electromechanical equipment If so Fairfax Countys Wastewater Collections Division is looking to hire you!

Wastewater Collections Division (WCD) is seeking an ambitious Plant Mechanic III to join a diverse group of mechanics in operating maintaining and repairing the countys wastewater pumping stations.

WCD manages and operates Fairfax Countys wastewater collection system consisting of nearly 3400 miles of pipe over 100000 associated structures 57 metering sites and 70 pumping stations. WCDs organization includes approximately 140 sanitary sewer maintenance specialists and administrative support team members including heavy equipment operators instrumentation technicians industrial electricians plant mechanics administrative professionals and professional engineers.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Conducts expertlevel mechanical work on wastewater conveyance system equipment including pumps motors generators blowers engines and screening equipment.
  • Undertakes general building maintenance at the Robert P. McMath facility and at all Wastewater pumping station sites maintained by the Fairfax County Wastewater Collection Division.
  • Troubleshoots equipment issues and determines appropriate repair or replacement procedures.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on specialized machinery in pumping stations up to 600hp motors sewage grinder pumps and odor control systems.
  • Utilizes common and specialized tools for repairs precision measurement tools and minor electrical work.
  • Identifies and orders necessary repair parts operates various lifting devices and conducts forcemain repairs.
  • Manages general housekeeping duties at assigned pump stations.
  • Adheres to safety regulations as prescribed by the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) Virginia Occupational Safety & Health (VOSH) and Fairfax County Department of Public Works & Environmental Services.
  • Provides daily guidance training and mentoring assigned to Plant Mechanic II fostering skill development and promoting safe work practices.
  • Utilizes county computers for training online time attendance and contributes to career growth and performs additional duties as required.

The ideal candidate must have:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead plant mechanics maintenance crews and projects. Youll need to be able to translate your technical knowledge into everyday language explain any changes that come up and lead by example.
  • Able to work in a fastpaced collaborative team environment; and able to manage multiple priorities work under pressure and guide/delegate in meeting deadlines.
  • Promotes communication teamwork and collaboration within the team.
  • Detailed oriented with strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

NOTE: Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24hour oncall and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies including afterhours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education training and experience equivalent to the following: Graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education or completion of a registered apprenticeship program plus five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps motors and other wastewater equipment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid drivers license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check a preemployment physical examination and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Subject to 24 hour call back and must therefore be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least four years of experience in the following:


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to distinguish colors. Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to safely lift 50 pounds. Ability to stand stoop bend reach walk climb sit kneel reach crawl lift and manipulate materials with manual dexterity and work in strenuous and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. Ability to work in confined spaces and from equipment that has a weight restriction of 310 pounds. Drive 1ton pickup trucks 2ton utility truck and operate hoisting equipment. Frequent climbing stooping extended standing and use of ladders and stairs. Must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and other automated technologies to input access and retrieve digital information. Visual acuity to read data on electronic monitors. The ability to wear all personal protective equipment necessary to mitigate exposure to hazards which may include raw wastewater wastewater treatmentrelated chemicals loud noise slippery conditions and potential exposure to airborne substances or pathogens. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
