The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. Main Purpose of Job

The incumbent is responsible under general supervision for the repair work training and supervision of inmates in the electronics trade at a State Correctional Facility. Incumbent may perform more complex or security sensitive maintenance and repair task from time to time and may work out of his assigned trade when needed.

POSITION DUTIES

INMATE SUPERVISION:Assigns various maintenance repair and installation task to inmates performing at various levels of electronics or other work as needed.Trains and instructs inmates regarding proper methods and techniques use of tools and equipment to be proficient in repair and maintenance.Supervises inmates performance for the purpose of promoting good work habits meeting institutional labor quality standards and meeting the needs of the maintenance department for the repair and maintenance in the institutions.Inspects and approves all work performed by inmates for quality assurance.

Maintains control and discipline among inmate workers; conducts search for contraband items; administers verbal and written disciplinary actions to inmates for any violation of inmate conduct standards. Enforces safety sanitation custody and security regulations. Physically restrains inmates if necessary during fights or escape attempts.Maintains continual counts of inmates assigned to detail and follows all institutional policy regarding security and control of detail.

PERFORMANCE OF TRADE:Estimates time and material for assigned maintenance and repair task and orders as needed. Keeps records of supplies and materials used; inventories materials on hand and tools in use.Follows all institutional and department policies and procedures regarding control and security of tools and materials.Personally performs installation and fabrication task; plans and implements appropriate procedures; operates hand and power tools and equipment needed to perform daily maintenance task.Performs other duties as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Two years of electronics experience.

Notes:

1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article Section 8209 Annotated Code of Maryland.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialtycodes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants with the follow experience however; they are not required.

  • Two years of electronics experience.
  • Ability to perform certain installationmaintenance new construction or repair tasks.
  • Ability to operatehand and power tools and equipment needed.
  • Maintain CCTVsystems including multiplexors PLC devices video components VCRs televisions and monitors along with the accompanying computer hardware and software.
  • Maintain audio equipment such as amplifiers public address systems intercoms nurse call and paging systems within the institution.
  • Ability to repair telephone system which is a computer based standalone telephone systemportable radios and MATV systems which is a satellite receiver based television system for inmate and staff viewing.


LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland prior to permanent appointment.

2. Some positions in this classification may require employees to acquire theappropriate Maryland drivers license to operate motor vehicles for thetransportation of inmates or supplies.

3. Employees who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Selection standards for Correctional Officer certification are established by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article Section 8209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12 Subtitle 10 Chapter 01 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
Must be at least 21 years of age
A completed background investigation
Oral interview
Physical examination.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to callin 24 hours a day and therefore must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09 Testing for Illegal Use of .
