Harmar Place CommunityThe Maintenance Assistant is responsible for performing work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep machines mechanical equipment or the structure of an establishment in repair. Duties may involve pipe fitting boiler making insulating welding machining carpentry repairing electrical or mechanical equipment installing aligning and balancing new equipment and repairing buildings floors or stairs.Essential Functions Statement(s)
- Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools such as hammers hoists saws drills and wrenches to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices
- Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly building systems operate efficiently or the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate
- Inspects drives motors and belts checks fluid levels replaces filters or performs routine maintenance actions following checklists
- Cleans or lubricates shafts bearings gears or other parts of machinery
- Adjusts functional parts of devices or control instruments using hand tools levels plumb bobs or straightedges
- Assists in dismantling devices to access and remove defective parts using hoists cranes hand tools and power tools
- Paints or repairs roofs windows doors floors woodwork plaster drywall or other parts of building structures
- Provides grounds keeping services such as landscaping and snow removal as needed
- Performs general cleaning of buildings or properties
- Assists in the testing and treating of water supply as needed
- Assists in assembling boilers at installation sites using tools such as levels plumb bobs hammers torches or other hand tools
- Installs equipment to improve the energy or operational efficiency of residential or commercial buildings
- Positions attaches or blows insulating materials to prevent energy losses from buildings pipes or other structures or objects
- Tracks inventory of supplies used and needed for required maintenance
- Performs all other duties as assigned or directed

Skills & Abilities
- Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required
- Experience: Six 6 months or more of related experience in the maintenance field
- Computer Skills: Must possess basic computer skills
- Certifications & Licenses: Must possess a valid drivers license; Technical certificates in mechanical electrical carpentry or HVAC preferred; Must obtain and maintain mandatory state and federal requirements and certifications for practice or occupation
- Other Requirements: Must be available for oncall duty; Must be able to read write understand and speak the English language; Must be able to work with elderly residents families other health care staff members and outside vendors; Must be able to adhere to all terms and conditions set forth in the United Church Homes Employee Handbook
