National Records of Scotland (NRS) are looking for a highly skilled and versatile Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join our team who has expertise in Virtualisation Linux and Windows operating systems and Cloud technologies.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the support and maintenance of infrastructure solutions and will contribute to the development of new solutions as we focus on modernising our infrastructure using Cloud technologies.

At this role level you will:

  • ensure services are integrated delivered and operated as required
  • work with and support third parties in providing infrastructure services
  • work with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations provide input into overall management workforce budget technology roadmaps projects and tasks
  • lead and direct infrastructure specialist teams in building managing supporting and maintaining solutions according to departmental policy

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement infrastructure solutions and services for example networking and physical infrastructure commercialofftheshelf (COTS) software open source packages and solutions or virtual and cloud computing.
  • Use information security practices and available security controls to contribute to protecting solutions and services.
  • Proactively identify potential issues and risks associated with Infrastructure ensure timely mitigation strategies are implemented to maintain system reliability and performance.
  • Apply modern development standards describe different scripting tools and software that are available and currently in use and support others in applying them.
  • Break a problem down into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities. Own an issue until a new owner has been found or the problem has been mitigated or resolved.
  • Initiate and monitor actions to investigate patterns and trends to resolve problems effectively consulting specialists where required and determining the appropriate resolution and assist with its implementation.
  • Design systems characterised by medium levels of risk impact and business or technical complexity.
  • Select appropriate design standards methods and tools and ensure they are applied effectively.
  • Review the systems designs of others to ensure the selection of appropriate technology efficient use of resources and integration of multiple systems and technology.
  • Review requirements and specifications coordinating build activities across systems understanding how to undertake and support integration testing activities.

  1. Significant experience designing implementing and maintaining scalable infrastructure that meet user needs using Microsoft and Linux Operating Systems VMWare virtualization and Azure Cloud technologies.
  2. Knowledge of industry standards and experience in applying best practices for managing infrastructure. This includes using software automation tools like Ansible that simplify the management of applications systems and infrastructure.
  3. Demonstrable working experience leading infrastructure projects ensuring successful delivery. This includes engaging with stakeholders to make sure technical solutions match business goals.
  4. Demonstrable experience assessing risks and putting strategies in place to minimise disruptions and keep systems stable.

This post attracts a 5000 Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) pay supplement after a 3 months DDaT competency qualifying period. The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are temporary payments designed to address recruitment and retention issues caused by market pressures and are subject to regular review. This post is part of the Scottish Government DDaT profession. As a member of the profession you will join the professional development system currently BCS Role Mode plus.
