HT(ASCP) eligibility preferred.

High School Diploma or GED required Minimum 1 year experience in Histology or using Histology techniques required.

Must have the ability to follow established technical safety and clerical procedures.

Must have manual dexterity and motor coordination.

Be attentive to detail and precise in performing technical tasks.

Must be able to lift 50lbs.

Must be able cut artifact free four micrometer sections.

Must be able to perform a high quality manual H&E stain. Must be able to perform certain special stains i.e. (AFB Alcian blue BrownHopps Congo red Elastic Iron LHE Mucicarmine PAS with and without diastase GMS Thiazine and Trichrome).

Be attentive to detail and precise in performing technical tasks.

Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation decalcification processing embedding microtomy routine and special stains and frozen sections.

Must have sound understanding of basic laboratory instrumentation to include pH meter balances hydrometers microtomes cryostats coverslippers and tissue processors etc.

Must be able to prepare percent molar and normal solutions and stains.

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Strong problem solving and trouble shooting skillsAbility to work both independently and with a diverse group of peopleAbility to work flexible hours

May be exposed to disease bearing specimens hazardous chemicals or fumes and other hazards normally associated with a clinical laboratory setting.

The Histology Specialist performs work to support a laboratorys research endeavors and assists Instructors and Principal Investigators in a research laboratory. Performs or assists in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and the PI of the laboratory.

Responsibilities includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results maintenance of databases used in the lab ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments and participation in joint upkeep of the lab.

Daily laboratory maintenance duties as assigned.

Disposes of chemical waste in accordance with departmental and hospital regulations. Maintains and recycles laboratory chemicals including alcohol and xylene

Receives tissue and processes them for cryosectioning.

This includes trimming of the tissue samples preparing and embedding for cryosectioning cryosectioning labeling of slides and coverslipping.

Performs standard histology preparation: Fixes tissues in appropriate fixatives; dehydrates with graded alcohols; clears with xylene; impregnates with paraffin wax using an automated tissue processor.

Print worklists and aide in prioritizing daily workflow as directed.

Responsible for quality control of blocks and slides.

Ensures all blocks and slides are clerically correct.

Assembles and collates slides.

Distribute blocks to histologists per assignment.

Distribute slides to residents and staff pathologists.

Keeps accurate records of blocks and slides produced.

Files tissue blocks ensuring each is properly labeled.

Shares responsibility for preparation of solutions and reagents in accordance with approved procedures.

Responsible for reviewing MSDS documentation.

Participates in the design of experiments.

Fixes tissues in appropriate fixatives; dehydrates with graded alcohols; clears with xylene; impregnates with paraffin wax using an automated tissue processor.

Responsible for maintaining tissue processors in accordance with policy.

Embeds specimens ensuring proper orientation.

Produces few micrometer thin sections using a microtome and appropriate knives; floats sections on a water bath; collects sections on a glass slide; dries in a slide dryer for a specified time.

Stains slides with routine and special stains according to approved procedures to enhance certain tissue elements required for evaluation.

Coverslips and labels stained slides.

Examines slides with a microscope to ascertain that the results are satisfactory.

Takes photographs on a microscopic imaging system of the produces histological samples and keeps an archive of such images for review by investigator/PI.

Responsible for the Histology Section Timely accessioning grossing processing and embedding of specimens as well as cutting of sections (microtomy and cryotomy)

Routine H&E stains routine special histochemical stains (Giemsa Trichrome Toluidine Blue Verhoeffs PSA PAS Movat Sudan Blue) Special Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescent staining Maintains histology equipment (tissue processor microtome cryostat and staining area) and troubleshoots Handles ordering of consumable histology supplies (paraffin fixatives stains slides coverslips disposable knife blades etc.

Routine daily core lab work: reagent preparation clean dishes

Consults with research staff for appropriate method of processing individual project requests

Maintains all records in accordance with strict laboratory practice guidelines as required by the FDA Willing to learn new techniques and work independently

Participates in the upkeep of the lab; this includes keeping both direct and general work space clean and tidy and helping maintain an overall safe and clean environment

Performs other core lab work accordingly as needed Responsible for the Imaging Section

Obtaining histology imaging using core imaging equiptments including brightfield and fluorescent microscopes digital imaging system confocal system live cell time lapse imaging system and whole slide scanner taking measurements and data analysis as assigned

Helping/training graduate students postdoctoral fellows and researchers to use core imaging equipments mentioned above Imaging lab instrument operation maintenance and trouble shooting

Responsible for the Animal Section Working with animals assisting with daily animal care and transportation of animals or specimens between project sites

Administering medication and treatment to animals as assigned Assisting in animal surgeries/procedures

Collecting study data synthesizing and interpreting information obtained from graphs charts experiments statistical summaries and other data collection methods

Notifying and seeking assistance from supervisor for any questions unusual experimental conditions/results or needed training Various other duties as assigned.

Workload may vary upon status and timelines of various projects.
