Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking an experienced Senior Archaeologist/Project Manager for immediate fulltime employment within our Cultural Resources practice. This hybrid role can be based in our Sacramento or Oakland CA offices.

The Senior Archaeologist is a core member of the Cultural Resources Program in Northern California comprised of archaeologists and architectural historians with responsibility for successfully executing projects and leading all aspects of project implementation as well as business development for cultural resources work in Northern California.

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Managing projects or tasks with small to largescale field efforts (survey testing data recovery and monitoring) and intensive schedules.
  • Managing and executing archival research technical report writing state and federal archaeological permitting data collection and compilation and/or GIS mapping.
  • Operating as primary author or senior reviewer as appropriate.
  • Supervising personnel in the field office and laboratory as needed.
  • Working knowledge of and experience in the practical implementation of state and federal environmental regulatory framework including the California Environmental Quality Act National Environmental Policy Act National Historic Preservation Act among others.
  • Handling multiple tasks and communicating priorities with multiple team members (field personnel project managers etc..
  • Operating as primary point of contact for a wide variety of clients including private local government state and federal agencies on projects as needed.
  • Performing client management duties such as recurring status meetings milestone checkins and daytoday interfacing.
  • Working independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and willingness to support multiple projects including occasional travel.
  • Serve as a Principal Investigator. 
  • Contributing to technical approaches and cost estimates for competitive proposals.
  • Performing project and/or task management duties such as forecasting tracking accounting updates invoicing progress reports and scheduling; this includes successful completion of AECOMs project manager certification program.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with clients and prospective clients and developing increased business for cultural resources services in Northern California specifically within the Sacramento and Bay Area metro regions.

Qualifications :

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree in Anthropology Archaeology History or a closely related field.
  • 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in historical and/or precontact archaeology and cultural resources management.
  • Must be willing to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout California.
  • Valid U.S Drivers license is required for this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Anthropology Archaeology History or a closely related field.
  • 8 years of experience in historical and/or precontact archaeology and cultural resources management.
  • 3 years of experience in a supervisory capacity in the field or in the office.
  • Experience with career development of junior and midlevel cultural resources staff and working closely with seniorlevel archaeologists and architectural historians.
  • Meets the Secretary of Interiors professional qualification standards in Archaeology.
  • Relevant field experience in the Western US.
  • Extensive experience preparing sections of CEQA documents including EIRs and ISMNDs for cultural resources and tribal cultural resources.
  • Experience with implementing Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Advanced knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g. lithic or faunal analysis; osteology; historical archaeology).
  • Demonstration of excellent technical writing skills as well as verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience leading tribal consultation and familiarity with tribal representatives in Northern California.
  • Experience supervising large crews and/or multiple crews on a variety of project types and sizes regions and agencies.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary team of subject matter experts and planners.
  • Knowledge managing GIS/GPS data.
  • Proven ability to lead proposals and win work.
  • Knowledge of regional and local cultural resources regulations.
