TITLE: Library Media Specialist
LOCATION:6th Grade Center
SUPERVISOR: Building Principal or Assistant Principal
JOB SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Principals or Assistant Principals the Library Media Specialist is responsible for helping students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature able and responsible young adults.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Teaching middleschool students how to retrieve and evaluate information from various print and digital sources.
- Encouraging reading and digital literacy.
- Maintaining a knowledge of the print and digital content of the library and how best to retrieve that content for students and staff.
- Understanding how information technology can relate outside the library.
- Understanding how to use library resources in research and sharing that knowledge with students and staff.
- Keeping up with how to retrieve information from internal and external sources as technology and programs change.
- Keeping up to date on current trends materials information and resources for students and staff
- Collaboratingwith teachers to recommend and build new book collections and literary resources.
- Assisting teachers in finding information resources for their class curriculum and collaborating on class projects.
- Acquiring new books to add to the collection on an ongoing basis for its users.
- Acquiring digital (and other nonprint) resources to keep the library uptodate and useful to its users.
- Keeping the library up to date by processing and cataloging the librarys holdings weeding the collection as needed repairing items and completing a yearly inventory.
- Serving as department chairs team leaders and building curriculum coordinators as needed.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Principal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university with certification and endorsements in library and media information systems. Masters Degree in Library and Information Sciences preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- 23 years teaching as a librarian/media specialist preferred especially at the secondary level.
LICENSES/CREDENTIAL: Valid Illinois Teaching Certificate/Licensure with the appropriate endorsements to teach grades six through twelve (preferably kindergarten through twelve).

- Student Contact Days and other days stipulated on the work calendar in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on the evaluation of professional personnel.
