Job Description

Nevada State University invites applications for the position of 1000 Hour Appointment Scorpion STEAM Academy Instructional Assistant for the Workforce Development department which will enhance the educational experience by supporting the teaching and learning process of our youth programs.

The Scorpion STEAM Academy (SSA) at Nevada State University supports the development and growth of a diverse community of young STEAM learners through innovative engaging experiences that promote the acquisition of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to enhance students personal academic and professional career success while meeting the needs of tomorrows workforce of Nevada. SSA promotes an increased interest in science technology engineering and math including their applications in art and music through targeted classroombased learning reinforced by handson projects and educational field trips to facilities of industry partners.

Summer 2025 daycamps will take place Monday to Friday between June and July during the following weeks:

  • Week 1: June 2nd through 6th.
  • Week 2: June 9th through 13th.
  • Week 3: June 16th through 20th (OFF 6/19.
  • Week 4: June 23rd through 27th.
  • Week 5: June 30th through July 3rd (OFF 7/4.
  • Week 6: July 7th through 11th.
  • Week 7: July 14th through 18th.
  • Week 8: July 21st through 25th.

SSA roles are seasonal as the summer camps are a limited term program.

Core Responsibilities

SSA Instructional Assistants will perform diverse duties requiring a degree of responsibility and independent judgement. The incumbent with supervision from the program manager and instructors will be expected to:

  • Policy & Procedures: Apply a thorough understanding of SSA policies and procedures to maintain a safe and organized learning environment during class activities and field trips demonstrating sound judgment and responsibility.
  • Classroom Support & Management: Facilitate handson camp activities by setting up classrooms equipment and materials requiring minimal guidance from instructors. Foster a respectful and productive learning environment by promoting high expectations communicating camp guidelines and addressing student behavior as needed.
  • Mentorship & Collaboration: Act as a role model and mentor for students fostering an encouraging and supportive camp environment. Work collaboratively with staff and peers to help students build confidence in STEMrelated activities and navigate challenges effectively.
  • Program Logistics & Support: Actively participate in all camp activities including classroom sessions site visits and group discussions. Manage inventory of equipment materials and supplies ensuring proper preparation and organization.
  • Administrative Tasks: Provide exceptional customer service and support through clear communication strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail in written and oral interactions.
  • Content Preparation: Design and facilitate 23 STEM activities 30 minutes) to be delivered during the afterschool portion of the camps.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Commitment to work MondayFriday 40 hours/week between JuneJuly 2025.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with students parents and staff.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain attention to detail in a fastpaced environment.
  • Employment is contingent upon a successful criminal background check.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employmentrelated visas).

Please note: Applicants must meet the posted minimum qualifications at the time of application in order to be considered for the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some college coursework preferably in a STEAM field.
  • Experience working with youth and diverse populations; demonstrated sensitivity to and strong interest in supporting socioeconomically disadvantaged students.
  • Experience designing or facilitating educational activities particularly in STEM fields.
  • Certified in CPR/AED and First Aid training will be provided.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or another language.

Work Hours:

This position may work up to 40 hours per week based on summer camp needs from Monday to Friday between 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. Note that there is a precamp mandatory training on Mayfor all SSA staff.

Hourly Rate:

$15.00 per hour.
