Job Description

The Lockhart ISD Mission

Primary Purpose:

The primary purpose of the campus nurse is to implement the district school health program and provide direct services to meet the needs of students under the clinical supervision of the Health Services Coordinator or School Nurse (RN).

Education/Certication:

High School diploma or GED

Valid RN / LVN Texas license issued by the Board of Nurse Examiners

Healthcare Provider CPR certification by American Heart Association or American Red Cross or willing to obtain

Preferred Certified by Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct hearing and vision screenings

Special Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of basic first aid and health appraisal to identify student health defects

Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to communicate eectively (verbal and written)

Ability to use personal computer and software

Ability to implement policies and procedures

Experience:

One year nursing experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students according to district policy and procedures and as per nursing license (RN/LVN).
  2. Manage the activities/care and prescribed medical treatment of students in the absence of the regularly assigned nurse.
  3. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures and doctors standing orders.
  4. Maintain appropriate and timely documentation as directed by the Health Services Coordinator.
  5. Comply with Texas Department of State Health Services regulations and District policy.
  6. Assess student problems as per nursing license (RN/LVN) and make appropriate referrals working with students teachers parents and medical and health care professionals as needed.
  7. Authorize exclusion and readmittance of students with contagious diseases using guidelines as outlined by LISD Policy and the Texas Department of State Health Services Communicable Disease Chart.
  8. Notify parents of accident or illness and secure emergency medical care for students as needed
  9. Work collaboratively with Health Services Coordinator and the primary nurse regularly assigned to the campus.
  10. Maintain complete and accurate health records for students.
  11. Maintain communication with the principal and supervising nurse regarding health problems and related matters.
  12. Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
  13. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.
  14. Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.
  15. Report potential health and safety hazards to principal and Health Services Coordinator.
  16. Demonstrate behavior that is professional ethical and responsible.
  17. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  18. Maintain confidentiality.

Certicates Licenses Registrations:

  1. License from the State of Texas to practice as RN or LVN.
  2. Practices within the dened limits of the Texas Nurse Practice Act and the scope of practice of a RN or LVN.
  3. Completes mandated Continuing Education (CE) requirements to maintain nursing License.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Frequent standing sitting kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking grasping/squeezing wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting 45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint assisting nonambulatory students

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards bacteria and communicable diseases

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress

$125 (LVN) to $150 (RN) per Day
