FLSA Status: ExemptSite/Location:Laurel Regional ProgramReports to:Director of Laurel Regional ProgramDate:7/26/2024POSITION SUMMARY

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual emotional physical and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Provide direct instructional and behavioral support to students with behavioral challenges in a positive environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Instructional Strategies

  1. Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory and perceptual motor skills language cognition and memory.
  2. Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics multisensory learning and repetition to reinforce learning and to meet students varying needs and interests.
  3. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the districts curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  4. Teach socially acceptable behavior as determined by the students individualized education plan (IEP) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.
  5. Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
  6. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  7. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Laurel Regional Program burg City Schools board policies and administrative regulations.
  8. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  9. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  10. Work cooperatively with other special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  11. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals objectives and methods according to district requirements.
  12. Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
  13. Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.

Student Growth and Development

  1. Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  2. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  3. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the director.
  4. Be a positive role model for students support the mission of the school district.
  5. Provide crisis intervention as needed for students.

Classroom Management and Organization

  1. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all students.
  2. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.
  3. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  4. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  5. Assist in selection of books equipment and other instructional materials.

Communication

  1. Confer with parents administrators testing specialists school social worker BCBA and other professionals to develop individualized education plans designed to promote students educational physical and social/emotional development.
  2. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents students the director and teachers.
  3. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues students parents and community members.
  4. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  5. Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on children and activities as required by laws district policies and administrative regulations.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in staff development activities to improve jobrelated skills.
  2. Keep informed of and comply with state district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  3. Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required.
  4. Attend and participate in faculty meetings serve on staff committees and participate in student/parental involvement activities as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with a special education endorsement in general curriculum k12 and in elementary education (K5th.
