General Statement:Provides technical expertise and manual skill in the inspection servicing and repair of district vehicles.
Class Definition: Must have knowledge of both gas and diesel equipment welding brazing shop presses test equipment air tools jacks dollies and automotive equipment and tools basic communication skills to exchange information give/receive simple instructions and respond to inquiries; performs routine computations requiring a knowledge of addition subtraction multiplication and division using whole numbers fractions decimals and/or percentages; must be able to read and interpret routine written or printed materials such as basic schematics manuals charts diagrams maps or instruction material; and must be able to use tools or equipment with expertise acquired through extensive experience and/or specialized training. The most complex tools or equipment necessary to perform satisfactorily include: refrigerant recovery systems electrical system/tune up testing machines; alternator tester; shop press.
Responsibilities:
- Collects bus and vehicle inspection reports.
- Performs necessary bus and vehicle repairs as indicated by bus drivers and other transportation personnel.
- Diagnoses problems test drives equipment before and after repair to ensure proper working order.
- Performs daily and periodic preventive maintenance fluid levels brakes tire condition tune ups lubes etc. to buses and maintenance vehicles.
- Performs overhaul to motors rear ends transmissions brakes clutches etc.
- Performs inspections to vehicles. Safety inspects all buses and vehicles.
- Performs necessary inventory of equipment.
- Maintains necessary records of service to vehicles/buses.
- Maintains a clean service center; maintains tools in a safe and clean manner.
- Picks up/exchanges buses or other vehicles.
- Available on call as needed in case of bus failure.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience:
- Minimum of three years in auto and diesel mechanics setting.
- Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent vocational experience in or after high school in auto mechanics is required in lieu of high school degree.
- Certification & Licensing:
- Class B C.D.L. with air brakes & passenger and endorsements
- Authorized to work in the USA
- Current national background check without disqualifying results at time of hire.
- Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Duties are performed on a school bus. While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; noxious odors; vibrations from driving a bus; and traffic.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger handle or feel; use foot controls to drive; reach with hands and arms; climb; bend stoop and kneel; and talk and hear.
- The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures.
- The employee must be able to communicate orally and hear on a twoway radio with transportation dispatch and emergency services while the bus is in motion.
- Employee must be able to communicate effectively and positively with parents students staff and coworkers.
- This includesthe pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds. In addition have the ability to use emergency exits at any location on the bus.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision night/dusk vision color vision and peripheral vision.
