Job Description

DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation on an oncall basis. Operates school buses under all types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog rain hail sleet snow and ice. Transports students and other authorized persons over regular to and from school routes and on field extracurricular and special or extra activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.

SALARY RANGE: $23.79 per hour

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and a valid Washington State Drivers License.
  • Maintain a valid Washington State endorsement for bus driver or ability to successfully complete school bus driver training programs and courses as required and which may be established by the school district.
  • Ability to work well with othersand promote a positive attitude.
  • Successfully pass a DOT Physical and participate in drug and alcohol testing as required.
  • Bus driver experience preferred but not required.
  • Clearance of State and National background checks as a result of fingerprinting successfully pass criminal records check.
  • Ability to solve practical problems apply appropriate judgment and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse students and parents desirable.
  • Be of general good health.
  • Willingness to work with children in a kind and caring manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drives bus on assigned routes in a legal and safe manner.
  • Instructs students in proper bus conduct.
  • Reports misconduct on bus through established district procedures.
  • Fuels bus as needed.
  • Conduct pretrip and posttrip inspections to insure bus is in safeoperating condition.
  • Cleans bus interior and exterior as needed.
  • Completes daily log forms and other paper work as required.
  • Successfully complete school bus driver training programs and courses established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the district
  • Operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies promulgated by the Superintendent of Public Instruction
  • Operate and service all school bus equipment and accessories including but not limited to: fire extinguishers highway warning kits snow chains sanders first aid kits etc.
  • Perform required operations and safety inspection of the school bus and all related equipment.
  • Operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus.
  • Perform basic first aid as appropriate which may include CPR.
  • Other duties as assigned by Transportation Department supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Operate school buses or district vehicles under all types of weather conditions. Some duties may require working in the outside elements. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be elevated at times.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

The employee must lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds and may assist move or retrain students with greater weight when required to intervene in student safety issues.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit lift carry move about hear and speak. Employee may be required to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate or consistent with the subject being taught but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions temperature fluctuations fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.

The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
