Job Description

TITLE: HEAD MECHANIC

DEPARTMENT: Transportation

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must possess ASE Certification (or equivalent certification) as bus fleet mechanic in more than one area.
  2. Must possess a valid Arizona Drivers License Class B Commercial Driver License with P (passenger) and S (school bus) endorsements.
  3. Must possess a valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card.
  4. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  5. A minimum of seven 7 years vehicle maintenance experience is preferred.
  6. Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge skills and abilities.

JOB GOALS:

The Head Mechanic carries the responsibility of maintaining the districts school buses other vehicles and mechanical equipment ensuring good operating condition. The Head Mechanic anticipates mechanical failures that could result in the delay of student transportation or present a safety hazard to operators passengers or bystanders. The Head Mechanic is also responsible for implementation of vehicle and equipment maintenance programs in an efficient and economical manner while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship and safety.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following tasks are essential for this position. This list is not inclusive of all responsibilities. Individuals may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed.

  1. Complies with HIPAA and FERPA related confidentiality requirements.
  2. Develops positive relations with students parents school staff and the public.
  3. Is next in line to the Director of Transportation in having ultimate responsibility for the maintenance and repair of district school buses other vehicles and equipment.
  4. Provides direct instruction guidance training and oversight to certified and uncertified mechanics in the resolution of mechanical issues and completion of all required equipment maintenance.
  5. Performs routine servicing of vehicles and equipment.
  6. Maintains records on all vehicles in accordance with local and state requirements.
  7. Reports bus damage unrelated to fair wear and tear to the Director of Transportation for corrective action.
  8. Establishes and implements an effective maintenance program related to vehicle servicing and repair.
  9. Prioritizes and schedules job tasks in order to best utilize the mechanic work force and time available.
  10. Operates a school bus in the transportation of students in accordance with the duties related to a school bus driver whenever such assistance is required.
  11. Assists and keeps the Bus Driver Trainer informed of potential related technology upgrades.
  12. Attends appropriate workshops and training programs as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
  13. Establishes and maintains a clear tracking system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies.
  14. Assists the Director of Transportation with researching specifications capabilities and associated costs when purchasing new or used buses or equipment.
  15. Promotes safety techniques and philosophies in the garage by using proper tools and maintaining clean surroundings.
  16. Takes responsibility for proper care of all transportation tools equipment and supplies.
  17. Provides oversight in the purchasing of all maintenance and repair related parts and supplies.
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of:

  1. District policies operations and organization.
  2. Interpersonal skills including tact courtesy and diplomacy.
  3. Communication (telephone email etc. etiquette.
  4. Related materials methods and tools to maintain automotive and mechanical equipment including buses passenger vehicles and miscellaneous utility vehicles.
  5. Thorough understanding of Arizona Administrative Code Title 13 Chapter 13 School Buses (Minimum Standards).

Skill and Ability to:

  1. Work cooperatively with others.
  2. Establish work priorities to meet schedules and timelines.
  3. Engage and encourage communication skills while interacting with supervisors staff students etc. to exchange information.
  4. Apply leadership techniques.
  5. Conceptualize and implement solutions to complex problems.
  6. Perform Head Mechanics duties.
  7. Operate a school bus.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
  2. Requires the mobility to stand stoop reach and bend. Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
  3. Requires the ability to stand for long periods.
  4. Requires the ability to walk long distances.
  5. Performs work which involves the frequent lifting pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 75 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 100 pounds.
  6. May be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection from sun cold and rain.
  7. May be required to work with harsh and toxic substances.
  8. May be required to wear protective apparel including goggles face protectors aprons shoes and oxygen breathing apparatus.
  9. May be required to work around foul odors loud noise moving mechanical parts electrical current.

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Director of Transportation in accordance with the provisions of Governing Board policy for evaluation of classified personnel.

TERMS OF

EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months

SALARY: Salary for the position is set according to the Classified Salary Schedule determined by the Governing Board.
