About the Camak Core for Professional Development
The Camak Core Program at Spartanburg Methodist College is an innovative oneofakind curriculum designed to prepare students for career readiness through experiential learning practical skill development and workforcealigned education. Rooted in the Colleges mission to equip students with the knowledge skills virtues and mindset needed to thrive personally create positive change in their communities and lead purposeful lives the Camak Core emphasizes the integration of essential skills such as teamwork communication leadership and problemsolving into the academic experience. Through the Camak Core SMC aligns educational outcomes with workforce needs by offering a transformative model that bridges the gap between classroom learning and professional success.
Structured as a series of six courses embedded in every SMC bachelors degree the program develops competencies in communication teamwork problemsolving and information analysis through projectbased learning and realworld applications. The curriculum is guided by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Competencies and includes numerous opportunities to engage directly with employers through classroom experiences and projects.
By embedding these competencies throughout the curriculum the Camak Core ensures graduates possess the essential skills to thrive in todays workforce. This approach aligns with Spartanburg Methodist Colleges vision to empower students through the fusion of liberal arts and career skills preparing them to overcome obstacles and confidently pursue their envisioned futures.

Position Overview
Spartanburg Methodist College seeks a dynamic studentfocused educator to join our faculty as a tenuretrack professor in the Camak Core Program. This faculty member will play a critical role in shaping the future of the program contributing to the development and delivery of innovative coursework designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and career readiness.
The ideal candidate will bring an interdisciplinary approach to teaching integrating projectbased learning industry partnerships and experiential learning models to prepare students for meaningful careers. The faculty member will collaborate closely with employers community partners and other Professional Development faculty members to work as a team to ensure that the Camak Core curriculum remains responsive to the rapidly evolving job market.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach 12 credithours each semester
- Develop and teach courses within the Camak Core curriculum including topics such as professional communication project management design thinking and officebased technologies.
- Work closely with other Professional Development faculty members to ensure an intentionally scaffolded curriculum builds throughout the coursework and a consistent experience and outcomes across all courses.
- Design experiential learning opportunities that connect classroom instruction to realworld applications including internships capstone projects consulting projects and collaborative industry partnerships.
- Collaborate with employers and community partners to create workforcealigned projects and career exploration experiences.
- Engage in ongoing curriculum development to ensure alignment with labor market trends NACE Career Competencies and student career outcomes
- Advise students on career pathways and professional skill development including supporting their discovery internship search job search and graduate school applications in collaboration with Career Development.
- Contribute to institutional efforts to track postgraduation outcomes and measure the ROI of the Camak Core curriculum
- Participate infaculty governance committee service and other forms of institutional leadership.
Educational Qualifications
- Masters degree required. Ph.D. or terminal degree in a relevant field preferred. The degree discipline may vary as practical work experience is a critical component of this academic discipline. Degrees may include Education Business Communication Organizational Leadership NonProfit Management or other related disciplines.
- Due to the workforce preparation requirements in the curriculum and an academic discipline in Professional Development does not exist work experience is emphasized.
- Professional Development faculty should possess a minimum of five years of work experience in a professional environment. Typical fields include student development internship supervision career services program development and evaluation nonprofit management human resources and other higher education or workforce trainingrelated fields.
Related Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to studentcentered teaching and experiential learning.
- Experience developing and implementing projectbased or communityengaged learning opportunities.
- Experience using a learning management system (D2L Brightspace Blackboard or Canvas.
- Knowledge of workforce trends career pathways and skillsbased education models.
- Familiarity with NACE Career Competencies and their application in curriculum design.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to contribute to a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
- Experience working in or collaborating with industry partners.
- Experience advising or mentoring students.

Founded in 1911 Spartanburg Methodist College is a private residential liberal arts institution serving a diverse student population within the United Methodist Connection. Since its founding as the first coop school in the nation SMC has remained dedicated to its mission to connect education and employment. After over 100 years as an Associate Degree granting institution the college launched its first bachelors degree in 2019. Today the colleges emphasis on education and employment includes a unique professional development concentration comprised of eight required courses for students seeking associate and bachelors degrees.
