Job Summary
The Collections Manager under the supervision of the Director of Collections develops budgets for and maintains departmental goals and objectives. This position is integral in the consistent planning and implementation of the Museums schedule of gallery maintenance permanent collection rotations and collections care. The position directly manages and oversees the Museums art collections their acquisitions documentation housing use preservation disposition and maintenance. Receives prepares and catalogs new materials; plans and organizes exhibitionrelated movement of objects including packing shipping and insurance for collections exhibitions as well as for incoming and outgoing loans to/from the Museum. Additionally manages the database of collection contents. As the collections grow and the exhibition program expands in line with the Museums strategic plan it is necessary to have skilled staff dedicated solely to the care of the and movement of permanent collection and keep up the gallery spaces that display the artworks.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
In collaboration with the Director of Collections oversees the schedule and daytoday management of contract preparators/technicians student staff and volunteers. Responsible for the implementation and management of Collections Management department processes and protocols including but not limited to: storage protocols access processes emergency response art incident checks rehousing guidelines departmental and work order processes and more. Partners with Facilities on environmental monitoring and the pest management program. Partners with Exhibitions Facilities and Curators to meet milestones and goals. Coordinates daytoday logistics of permanent collection cleaning art incident checks location moves rehousing and storage. Oversees and carries out collections care and maintenance in storage spaces and gallery spaces including routine collection dusting movement rehousing and storage space planning. Oversees vendors and contractors including tracking progress quality of work and deliverables. In coordination with the Director of Collections creates implements and manages training programs for art handling rehousing techniques integrated pest management and environmental monitoring that protect the high value assets of the museum. Collaborates with contract preparators and other departments to accomplish simultaneous goals and projects to museum standards and in alignment with best practices. Performs storeroom maintenance and upgrades including constructing shelving installing earthquake mitigation cleaning and organization as needed. May train and supervise staff and student employees interns and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers as appropriate to the area of operation. Special Projects as designated by Director of Collections.
