Summer 2025 Job Opportunities with Expanding Horizons Summer Program

The Expanding Horizons is a summer and afterschool program for students in grades 68. The program is operated by LEAP for Education (a Salembased nonprofit) in partnership with Salem Public Schools. The summer program which will run from July 7 August 7 on MondaysThursdays offers morning projectbased learning (PBL) opportunities in a variety of subject areas including technology STEM social justice SEL service learning) and afternoon in enrichment classes in the arts and sports.

Job Description for ProjectBased Learning Facilitators: Expanding Horizons is seeking teachers to facilitate two different projectbased learning opportunities described below.

The hours for the position are 8:30 AM 12:15 PM MondayThursday July 7 August 7 2025. The Facilitator will be paid for up some upfront planning time (prior to July 1 to create or add to the sequence of instruction and will have 2 hours of weekly planning time during the session. PBL facilitators will work with groups of 1520 students and will have support in the classroom from a group leader and behavior specialist who rotate among cohorts. Pay rate will be: contractual rate of $45 an hour for certified teachers and $30$35 an hour for noncertified.

Salem Woven Dreams facilitator: In the Salem Woven Dreams PBL opportunity students will explore the experiences of different groups of immigrants who have shaped and continue to shape the cultural landscape of our small city. With support from the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM). participating students will learn about the waves of immigration in Salem and the resilience struggles and triumphs of Salem immigrant communities gaining a deeper appreciation for the complexities of migration and cultural identity. As a result students will have a greater understanding of the diverse and dynamic community in which they live. Students will create an exhibit to share their learning that will be displayed in the PEM which is a partner in developing the project. An arts educator from the PEM will be leading some artsrelated activities with the students throughout the summer.

The Facilitator will be paid for up to 20 hours of upfront planning time (April June) to develop instructional plans (in collaboration with LEAP and PEM staff who have created an overall scope and sequence). Teachers with a background in social science/history or experience with local history (either personal or professional) are preferred.

Secure Healthy Food: This PBL experience is designed to increase students understanding of food insecurity challenges with accessing food (especially healthy food) and provide opportunities for students to explore resources (and people) in the community that advocate and promote access to healthy food. The project will include a community service component in which students respond to their learning in an active way. Along the way students will learn about nutrition making healthy food choices and how to cook some healthy meals on a budget.

The facilitator will be paid for up to 15 hours of upfront planning time (April June) to expand a similar afterschool offering to a summer PBL experience in Salem.
