Job Description
Graduation from an accredited college of pharmacy(Pharm D or BS Pharm with Oncology Specialty Certification (BCOP)
Current pharmacy licensure by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Minimum of 1 year in hospital pharmacy oncology and/or operating room experience preferred
Maintenance of continuing education as required by law
computer literacy
English proficiency
ability to work independently as well as supervise others
Effective communication(both written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
Organizational ability with attention to detail
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to work in highpressure situations.
Ability to work well on a team.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to pass areaspecific competencies
Daily exposure to the mental/emotional stress related to the oncology experience(s) of patients/families.
Risk of exposure to hazardous materials known carcinogens and risk of physical injury.
Able to lift up to 20 lbs.
Able to stand or sit for extended periods of time

General Overview
The MGH/NORTH SHORE Pharmacist collaborates with and serves as a resource for nurses physicians and other clinicians who participate in the management of the patients receiving care at the ACC which encompasses hematology /oncology outpatient surgery and diagnostic cardiology. He/she is responsible for coordinating and delivering pharmacy services in compliance with all applicable policies regulatory agency requirements and state and federal laws and participating in the quality improvement process to ensure safe effective and efficient delivery of quality care.
Jobspecific Responsibilities
Oncology
Monitors patient treatment (chemotherapy and ancillary) medications on a daily basis for appropriateness based on current clinical guidelines.
Assesses all medication orders to ensure they meet established standards and practice guidelines of MGH North Shore ACC. Reports order discrepancies to appropriate staff promptly.
Utilizes computerized systems to process medication orders.
Correlates patient laboratory results to prescribed therapy assessing need for dosing changes based on pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic alterations in drug disposition. Reports concerns and suggestions to clinical staff in a timely and effective manner to ensure patient safety and positive clinical outcomes and documents interventions in the medical record as appropriate.
Evaluates/reconciles all current patient medications including overthecounter and herbal medication for drug interactions.
Educates patients and their families to ensure their understanding of the goal administration schedule and toxicity management of chemotherapy treatment and documents the activity and interventions in the medical record.
Rigorously maintains current patient information files and records in the pharmacy department to maintain and support safe and consistent drug administration.
Accesses current clinical trial documents when reviewing clinical trial orders to ensure accuracy.
Maintains investigational medication logs.
completes required oncology learning modules or maintains BCOP certification through ACCP approved programs
Operating Room
Coordinates and assures the timely and accurate provision of pharmaceutical services.
coordinates preparation/procurement/distribution of specific patient medication orders and/or solutions for OR use.
Responsible for control distribution and monitoring of the use of controlled substances in the operating room area.

Participates in nursing education activities
prepares documents for Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee review.

supervises the preparation and distribution of medication
supervises the activities of the pharmacy technician
performs required audits of medication storage areas
provides support and expertise for use and maintenance of automated medication dispensing systems
supports a distribution system that is in compliance with state and federal regulations
maintains the system of controlled substance inventory
identifies recommends treatment of and reports adverse drug reactions
identifies and reports therapy errors
supervises the activities of the technician
trains other pharmacists technicians and students
assists in the development of policy and procedures
Seeks out and applies new pharmaceutical concepts and information as available. Disseminates current information to support other professional staff.
Manufactures sterile products according to current guidelines (ASHP USP NIOSH)
Adheres to safety requirements in the handling and preparation of chemotherapy and other hazardous agents.
