Description

A Northwest leader in protecting animals since 1967 the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) shelters homeless animals rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife and empowers people to demonstrate compassion and respect for animals in their daily lives.

Position Title: Shelter Veterinarian Saturday Only 8 hours/week)

Starting Wage: $60.00 $65.00/hour

Purpose of Position:

To provide medical care to the animals in PAWS shelter and in foster care. This position may involve performing surgical procedures such as wound repair emergency surgeries spay and neuter etc.

Essential Duties:

In accordance with organizational policies and procedures duties include but are not limited to:

  • Treats injured and ill animals in the shelter and helps monitor the health of the animals in the shelter and foster care program practicing veterinary medicine from a herd health perspective in accordance with PAWS policies related to health and adoptability and within PAWS budget. Make recommendations for and/or perform euthanasia in accordance with PAWS health/adoptability policies
  • Performs spay/neuter and other surgeries as needed.
  • Oversees medical functions of the CAS department including radiology dental procedures clinical laboratory procedures surgery maintaining medical records supervising veterinary student externs assisting with implementation of herd health policy training staff and externs in medical procedures as needed.
  • Advises and assists with training of clinic staff shelter staff and volunteers on the prevention of zoonotic infections and other medical issues of potential concern.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field of veterinary medicine particularly aspects of special concern to shelters including overpopulation control measures like early spay/neuter and their implications for shelter operations and programs. Obtains information and training necessary to spay neuter and treat as needed all species of animals cared for in the shelter.
  • Performs other related duties as required to ensure a positive work environment and public image.
  • May be called upon to examine animals and prepare reports to be used as evidence in cases of animal abuse being investigated by PAWS or legal authorities.
  • Trains veterinary students volunteer veterinarians as requested or needed.

Controls over Work:

The Shelter Veterinarian is a member of the CAS Medical Team and reports directly to the CAS Lead Veterinarian and is expected to perform the established duties and essential functions without direct supervision.

Physical Demands:

The Shelter Veterinarian must be able to lift a minimum of forty 40 pounds. Surgeries examinations and treatment of animals may require lifting bending stooping pushing and other moderately strenuous activities. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time including working at a computer surgery table and prep table. Work is performed at the PAWS facilities.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Must have been awarded the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor from an accredited university or school of veterinary medicine preferably with an emphasis on shelter medicine.
  • Have one year fulltime veterinary experience.
  • Experience working in an animal shelter (or similar animal welfare care group) preferred
  • Shelter experience and HQHV Spay and Neuter experience is highly desired.
  • Will have or can immediately obtain a valid Washington State License to practice Veterinary Medicine.
  • Must have excellent surgical skills preferably in a highvolume setting and experience handling surgical and anesthetic emergencies and postoperative complications.
  • Willing and able to work daily with companion animals and have a basic understanding of the needs and behavior of domestic cats and dogs. Must be able to handle individual animals in a caring safe and humane manner.
  • Possess basic computer knowledge and skills.

  • Ability to effectively manage people and provide a positive working environment built on team concepts.

  • Ability to work independently and from a herd health perspective and within PAWS resources.
  • Ability to work as part of a small team and help support staff with workload if needed.
  • Willing to work cooperatively with people and to communicate clearly about PAWS mission the care and treatment of animals and the safety of the public and other employees. Must be able to always represent PAWS professionally.
  • Organized and flexible and able to balance concurrent projects and adjust to rapid changing needs and work calmly under stressful conditions.
