Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Phlebotomist/Laboratory Technician greets patients processes paperwork and specimens and logs all tests into the computer. Performs heelsticks and/or venipunctures on all patients to include:
Infant (age 02 Adolescents (age 1420 Adult (age 2065 Older Adults >65 years). Performs EKGS upon request. Processes and prepares specimens for transport to the laboratory.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Greets patients arriving in the Phlebotomy Collection Station.

2. As appropriate performs patient registrations on new patients not in BICS. Updates demographic and fiscal information as necessary on existing patients.

3. Enters electronic orders as appropriate. Logs all tests checked off on the requisition making certain all pertinent information and comments are included in the process.

4. Produces bar code labels to affix to specimens after collection. Makes certain that specimens are appropriately labeled in the presence of the patient.

5. Performs venipuncture on populations defined above using proper patient identification and aseptic technique.

6. Collects the correct number and types of specimens for the order.

7. Performs EKGs and/or heelsticks as appropriate.

8. Works collaboratively as a member of the laboratory team at all times
a. Follows all policies and procedures related to attendance absenteeism tardiness and breaks.
b. Communicates in a professional and effective manner at all times.

9. Demonstrates professional behavior and customer service skills at all times.
a. Answers all calls and returns all pages with name department and greeting.
b. Effectively interacts with Supervisor coworkers and clinical staff to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.
c. Effectively interacts with patients and patients families to avoid stress and anxiety.
d. Demonstrates a caring and sensitive attitude to all clinical staff patients and families.

10. Prepares samples for transport to the laboratory in accordance with established policies.

11. Follows all policies and procedures including those specific to the Phlebotomy Collection Station.

12. Maintains and stocks Inventory:
a. Ensures adequate supplies on hand for rounds. Alerts Team Leaders or Supervisor when supply levels are low.
b. Routinely inspects tubes and other supplies for expiration dates and discards as appropriate.

13. Maintains the blood collection area and bathroom(s) in a clean and orderly fashion.

14. Performs all necessary paperwork and clerical duties as directed by the Supervisor. Prints daily patient reports and delivers them to each suite as needed. Makes daily scheduled rounds to practices that require pickup of samples.

15. Serves as liaison between the Clinical Labs and the onsite clinicians administrators and patients. Assists with problem resolution.

16. Rotates among hospital campus and off site collection stations as needed under the direction of the Supervisor.

17. Is responsible to be aware of Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and to compile with BWH Hospital and Laboratory polices and procedures

18. Performs all other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Phlebotomy certification preferred.
3. Prior Phlebotomy experience required.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

1. Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
2. Knowledge to select appropriate tubes and volumes for test(s) requested.
3. Ability to communicate with patients and families to alleviate fears and anxieties and make them feel comfortable and cared for.
4. Physically be able to stand and walk for long periods of time 90 of the day) and transport supplies and specimens as required.
5. Ability to communicate effectively with all clinicians and other hospital staff
6. All computer skills necessary for the use of Email and hospital applications as required.
7. Demonstrate competencies in areas of:
a. Venipuncture technique and all blood drawing procedures including capillary collection and blood cultures.
b. Appropriate choice of test tube and required blood volumes.
c. Specimen labeling and patient identification.
d. Customer service skills to include ability to communicate with patients and staff.
8. Must have the ability to interpret laboratory requisitions.
9. Must be able to perform specimen processing in accordance with dept policy.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Extremely busy work environment..
2. Exposure to needle sticks and punctures from other sharps.
3. Exposure to patients with infectious diseases. Must take appropriate precautions according to Infection Control and laboratory guidelines.
4. Required weekend/holiday rotation according to the needs of the department.
