Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors Degree and an interest in healthcare.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications including Word Excel and PowerPoint. Familiarity with REDCap Microsoft Access and End Note preferred (inhouse training is available).

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Funded by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality the MultiCenter Medication Reconciliation Quality Improvement Study II (MARQUISII) aims to disseminate implement and evaluate an evidencebased medication reconciliation toolkit at 18 hospitals across the country so that hospital staff use a more accurate and safe medication prescription process and patients experience fewer medication errors.

The Research Assistant (RA) will work directly with the MARQUISII Principal Investigator Project Manager and study team at Brigham and Womens Hospital as well as coinvestigators from the Society of Hospital Medicine Vanderbilt University and the University of Kentucky. The project involves regular interface with leadership and clinical providers across multiple medical academic and quality improvement partners. Accordingly a research assistant with a high level of professionalism and strong interpersonal skills is required. The RA will need excellent attention to detail and critical thinking skills.

Principal duties may vary depending on the phases of the project. The RA will support all activities associated with the of the research plan including Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions data collection and organizing sessions with the PatientFamily Advisory Council a group that serves to ensure patients and their families assume a vital role in the research effort. The RA will use REDCap MS Access and Excel to assist with data collection and analysis. The RAs responsibilities will also include administrative tasks and literature searches.

Based in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care (DGIM) the RA will have numerous voluntary opportunities for training and career development. DGIM holds a monthly medical seminar for RAs with review of clinical case studies and special topics a monthly RA journal club a research skills and data management training series and DGIM Research Day an annual forum for RAs to showcase their contributions via oral and poster presentations and promote professional development through a career panel discussion.

This is a temporary fulltime position for 6 months. DGIM conducts numerous research projects throughout the year; the research assistant hired may be strongly considered for other projects after this 6month assignment.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with data collection efforts perform data entry monitor data quality and create general summaries of study data.
  • Perform data abstraction from a variety of sources including surveys and focus group transcripts. Potential for review of patient medical records and hospital clinical information systems as well.
  • Perform general topic searches and specialized literature database searches. Retrieve journal articles from the Internet or library. Maintain a bibliographic library of supporting material.
  • Help with the preparation of talks and presentation materials including PowerPoint slides tables and graphs. May assist with the preparation of formal research reports and manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
  • Assist with preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) documentation and forms for study protocol approvals and amendments.
  • Photocopying electronic mailing sending mail faxing scheduling meetings recording meeting minutes documenting project work and other administrative duties as required.
