GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the general direction of the Technical Director and Medical Director is responsible for staff training and competency assists with signout of patient reports assist compliance officer and assists with the supervision of daily work activities of personnel engaged in the performance and interpretation of Tissue Typing Laboratory testing procedures. Assists in the oversight of the laboratory in the absence of the Technical Director.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Assists in the daily supervision of technical clerical and service employees in designated area (stem cell or solid organ transplantation) of the Tissue Typing Laboratory.
2.Plans organizes delineates and schedules duties and responsibilities of Tissue Typing Laboratory staff in conjunction with the Technical Director.
3.Provides assistance as needed in troubleshooting and result interpretation.
4.Receives all reports of variances and incidents in the laboratory investigates and reports to Technical and Medical Directors for resolution in a timely manner; is responsible for appropriately triaging these events based on severity and potential consequences to patients.
5.Must be accessible to staff members to provide consultation in resolving technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established in the Tissue Typing Laboratory and Lab Administration.
6.Assists Technical Director with hiring counseling evaluating and terminating employees following the established laboratory and hospital guidelines.
7.Assists in communicating departmental information to the laboratory staff.
8. Promotes a spirit of professionalism and excellence in performance among the tissue typing laboratory staff.
9 conjunction with the Technical and Medical Directors ascertains the reliability of all test results issued by the Tissue Typing Laboratory and takes remedial action when necessary.
10.Assists Technical Director and Medical Directors with verifying and reporting patient test results.
11.Serves as a resource to clinicians (both within BWH at DFCI and at various regional transplant centers) providing assistance related to laboratory policy laboratory utilization and test result interpretation.
12.Assist with ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies.
13.Assists in reviewing Quality Control (QC) records QC failures and corrective action monitoring QC trends and lack of appropriate QC documentation.
14.Assists Technical Director and Compliance Supervisor to maintain all Standard Operating Procedure manuals and required records and reports. Reviews and revises SOPs on an as needed basis or on an annual basis at a minimum.
15.Assists with evaluation of new methods equipment and/or procedures. Assists in writing SOPs for new tests methods or kits.16.Assists with the development implementation and coordination of new laboratory test/techniques.
17.Assists in compiling information for Quality Improvement and assists in the enhancement and management of Quality Assurance.
18.Answers requests for interpretation of test results and investigates reports of inaccuracies in the laboratory made by the physicians: assists the Technical Director and Medical Director in resolution of existing problems.Education and Training
19.Responsible for developing implementing and updating a training program for all laboratory personnel in the laboratory.
20.Assists in staff training and instructs laboratory personnel and students and documents training.
21.Responsible for developing implementing and updating a competency assessment program for all laboratory personnel in the laboratory.
22.Documents annual competencies so that they are available at the time of performance evaluations.
23.Coordinates with Technical Director and other Clinical Supervisors to make sure that staff members are crosstrained so that the laboratory is able to safely and accurately perform testing regardless of variation in workflow from day to day.
24.Keeps current regarding developments in techniques and trends in histocompatibility and immunologic testing through appropriate technical journals as well as internal and external educational programs. Works with Directors to assist in the ongoing education of other laboratory technologists by frequent updates at inhouse seminars.
25.Assists Technical Director in organizing laboratory participation in regional national and international workshops.
26.Assists Technical Director in scheduling and emcees weekly technical/educational meetings; contacts outside speakers where appropriate in order to update and expand knowledge of laboratory staff in areas of histocompatibility immunology and transplantation.
27.Is responsible for compliance with ASHI standards TJC (The Joint Commission) National Patient Safety Goals and BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures.
28.Performs other duties as required or assigned.

1.Must possess either an earned doctoral OR masters OR bachelors degree in a chemical physical biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution
OR
other qualifications as described in the Federal Register 42 CFR Subpart M 493..
2.There are currently no licensure requirements in histocompatibility.
3.Job requires technical skills and theoretical background usually acquired during at least five years of laboratory training or experience in human immunogenetics human histocompatibility and/or human transplantation immunology testing under the supervision of a director and/or technical supervisor of an ASHIaccredited or an equivalent ARB approved laboratory.
4.Experience in training and supervising junior technologists is preferred; this experience is generally acquired during a period as a senior technologist or trainer.
ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1.The advanced knowledge both practical and theoretical of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action.
2.The supervisory and managerial abilities necessary to direct and coordinate activities of personnel.
3.Highly developed verbal and written communication skills in order to educate technical staff insure efficient and effective workflow and present recommendations to Technical & Medical Directors.
4.Excellent organizational and time management skills needed.
5.The manual/visual dexterity and skills necessary to operate adjust and make minor repairs to various types of laboratory equipment.
6.Must have high level of analytical ability to resolve technical problems stemming from faulty equipment reagents or abnormal patient cells or sera and to interpret quality control data. Job requires experience sufficient to troubleshoot complex technical problems encountered in the laboratory.
7.Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to the laboratorys analytical procedures and quality control. Ability to be able to identify modifications/enhancements that would benefit the laboratory in terms of patient safety and efficiency.
8.Must possess interpersonal skills to interact effectively with coworkers subordinates physicians healthcare workers outside visitors and students.
9.Must be able to remain calm and productive under pressure and emergency situations which may produce a high level of stress and mental fatigue.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1.Must possess ability to think clearly under stress and exercise correct judgment in performance and reporting of tests.
2.Exposure to infectious blood tissues (such as spleen lymph node bone marrow aspirate cheek swabs) and other body fluids.
3.Work requires frequent standing and walking (about 50 of work time) and some lifting of supplies (less than 50 pounds).
4.Must possess visual acuity sufficient to distinguish between variations in stained cells; must possess manual dexterity to work with small instruments and delicate equipment and tissues.
5.Noise level is high due to continuous operation of lab equipment.
6.Exposure to normal office environment.
7.Required to carry and respond to a BWH pager.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
1.Daily supervision of Senior 34 and Junior Technologists 10.
2.Responsible for primary designated area in laboratory for purposes of training organization and reporting.
3.Assists Technical Director with personnelrelated decisions (such as interviewing and assessing prospective employees evaluating performance of Tissue Typing technologists recommending job responsibility changes etc..
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
1.Provides information to Technical Director with preparation of budgets and associated justifications.
