A registered nurse who as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team provides appropriate assessment intervention and direct care to pediatric and adult patients and family.Provides competent and compassionate nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of nursing process.
Discusses patient diagnosis and plan of care with the Radiation Oncologist Performs initial patient assessment which recognizes age appropriate behavior nutritional needs cognitive and physiologic norms.
Provides age appropriate patient education regarding radiation chemotherapy diagnostic tests medications symptom management and followup care. Identifies facilitates and evaluates outcomes of nursing care through weekly assessment utilizing nursing process.
Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent patient/family information to/from other healthcare team members: radiation therapists social service dietary and VNA and community services.
Collaborates with other professionals and directs nonprofessional staff in maintaining recognized standards.Participates in daily operational activities of the Radiation Oncology Department.
Coordinates clinical activities with the physician and radiation therapists to ensure efficient flow of patient care. This includes weekly treatment management checks followup clinics and new patient consultations and procedures.
Qualifications:Incumbents must be graduates of an accredited nursing programIncumbents must have a current Massachusetts license as a Registered NurseIncumbents will possess a minimum of 2 (two) years of oncology nursing
Bachelors Degree
Oncology Certification preferred working towards attainment of OCN with expectation of certification within discussed timeframe of employment.
Skills / Abilities / Competencies:
Possess excellent assessment judgment and reasoning skills
Experience in dealing with and caring for complex physical psychosocial needs of patients and families
Ability to prioritize and manage time efficiently
Expectation of receiving OCN within specified period of time
Basic computer skills necessary for documentation enter/edit and retrieving dataWork is performed in the MGH Radiation Oncology Unit at MGH
