GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
A collaborative research group based within the Massachusetts General Hospital Emergency Department (MGH ED) is developing a platform for automated clinical decisionsupport during critical care of trauma patients. The system is an enhancement of the teams previously implemented APPRAISE system (Automated Processing of the Physiological Registry for Assessment of Injury Severity) which was successfully deployed onboard Boston Medflight helicopters during actual clinical operations. Once the new system is developed and tested it is intended for deployment into the MGH ED in late 2016 or early 2017 as part of an investigation into the clinical impact of automated decisionsupport on the quality of care provided to trauma patients. The computing platform will also be developed to accommodate other decisionsupport functionality including decisionsupport for patients with sepsis and with acute spinal cord injury.
The successful applicant will take on a leadership role in developing formal specifications based on the clinical requirements identifying implementation options for the system selecting the optimal implementation option with the input of the collaborative team independently building the software solution documenting the software implementation and testing the software solution. After clinical deployment responsibilities will include ongoing maintenance and QA of the operational system. Functionality will be added in a phased approach with basic functionality established in the initial 12 mo and additional capabilities in later time intervals.
Reporting to the projects Principle Investigator the Software Engineer takes primary responsibility for the build test release maintenance support and documentation of the platform.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties and responsibilities involve the development and testing of set of constituent functionalities entailing the following steps:
  • Lead the development of authoring formal technical requirements
  • Lead the identification of technical options for implementing the functionality
  • Lead the selection of the optimal implementation option in consultation with the PI coinvestigators and stakeholders.
  • Build the solution without substantial need for technical support
  • Test the solution in consultation with the PI coinvestigators and stakeholders.
  • Document the build and testing of the solution without substantial need for support
The specific constituent functionalities are:
  • Electronic connectivity with the patients bedside monitor
  • Data archiving of the data from the patients bedside monitor
  • Implementation of basic analysis algorithms
  • Basic graphical user interface (GUI) with display of the data and the analysis output
  • Onscreen decisionsupport messages from a library of messages that appear under prespecified conditions
  • Trouble shooting messages to allow users to identify and resolve any foreseeable system failures
  • Advanced GUI after developing basic GUI
In addition to the technical software development the applicant will also be responsible for:
  • Leading focus groups for user feedback
Development of technical specifications for medical software applications based on user requirements
  • Implementation and testing of medical device electronic interfaces such as RS232 connections
  • Implementation of graphical user interfaces for display of data and analytic output sourced from medical devices
  • Implementation of automated analysis algorithms for data sourced from medical devices
  • HTML5 Node and JavaScript experience
  • Java programming experience
  • Experience with building maintaining and querying databases such as SQL and MongoDB.
