Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS: Appropriate teaching certificate issued by the Massachusetts Department of Education for Social Studies grades 912. Ability to communicate effectively. Effective interpersonal and organizational skills. B.S./B.A. with a strong GPA in relevant coursework Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: This role is responsible to the principal or his/her designee: must work cooperatively with other professional personnel; may supervise the work of instructional learning assistants teacher assistants volunteers student interns as assigned; evaluated by the principal or his/her designee.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY: To exhibit teaching skills which allow for a maximum of learning and a minimum of disciplinary action; maintains professional relationships with other teachers students staff parents; demonstrates commitment to continued professional development.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:Instruction: Creates and maintains a stimulating physical classroom environment conducive to learning. Establishes and implements efficient classroom management procedures. Continually evaluates and records various aspects and indicators of students progress. Demonstrates competency in his/her area of training and assignment. Plans lessons effectively; shows evidence of daily and long term planning. Makes provisions for individual differences. Encourages the development of independent work habits. Uses appropriate language for students to model. Uses varied and appropriate instructional techniques to accomplish instructional objectives. Implements the curriculum as prescribed by the school district. Helps students evaluate their own work. Communicates clearly using precise language and acceptable oral expressions. Monitors students understanding of the lesson and adjusts teaching when appropriate. Encourages a positive atmosphere for all students especially those with special needs. Demonstrates a positive attitude. Works to help students acquire a positive selfimage.Professional Relationships: Encourages a respect for opinions rights property and contribution of others. Communicates and maintains a working relationship with parents. Maintains confidentiality with respect to students and their performance and records. Is regularly available for extrahelp sessions. Cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students resolve attitude behavior and learning problems. Leaves clear and complete lessons and instructions for substitutes. Participates in the evaluation and revision of curriculum.Professional Development: Continually evaluates his/her own behavior and performance as a teacher. Participates actively in a professional development program. Explores new teaching techniques as alternatives to better accomplish predetermined instructional objectives including the use of educational technology. Performs noninstructional duties. Contributes to the schools extracurricular programs.
