PreK After School ProgramInternship Internal Salem Public Schools Student ONLY SY

Job Description & Program Goal:

The PreK AfterSchool program operates in conjunction with the school calendar running from school dismissal until 5:00 p.m. (with no programming on scheduled half days). The program serves PreK students across four sites: Bentley HMLS Bates and the ECC with each site hosting 1518 students.

Internship Commitment:

Interns are expected to commit to 24 days per week with program hours varying slightly by site:

  • Bentley: 2:005:00 p.m.
  • HMLS: 2:305:00 p.m.
  • Bates: 2:455:00 p.m.
  • ECC: 2:005:00 p.m.

Salem Public Schools recognizes the critical role of wraparound services in supporting students and their families. As part of this commitment we provide PreK afterschool programming focused on enhancing student engagement fostering socialemotional learning and offering reliable care for families.

We are seeking high school interns interested in early childhood education to serve as support staff in these programs. Interns will assist program staff in delivering quality afterschool care helping create a collaborative and positive environment for students.

In addition to providing support interns will have the unique opportunity to design and lead a 3045 minute enrichment session once a week. These enrichment activities can focus on areas such as:

  • Fine and gross motor skills development
  • Yoga Pilates or other physical activities
  • Music dance or arts & crafts
  • Socialemotional learning (SEL) through creative expression

Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting the afterschool program by assisting staff with daytoday activities and student supervision.
  • Preparing and implementing a weekly enrichment session tailored to PreK students.
  • Modifying activities to meet individual student needs including those with IEPs or nonEnglish speakers.
  • Encouraging positive peer relationships and fostering a welcoming inclusive environment for all students.
  • Collaborating with program staff to create adaptive activities that support students with varying abilities.

This internship is ideal for high school students interested in exploring a career in early childhood education while making a meaningful impact on young learners.
