Job Title: Academic Coordinator PreCollege

Department: Open Studies

Division: Academic Affairs

Reports to: Director of Youth & Community Education



MICAs 2 and 4week PreCollege Art and Design Program offers an intensive collegelevel experience designed to help participants transition from thinking like high school art students to approaching their work as professional artists. Students develop art that demonstrates advanced skills and personal vision communicate their ideas during daily critiques and build a professional portfolio. Tailored for rising juniors and seniors (ages 15 to 17 this program immerses students in a vibrant artistic community while exposing them to the rigor of collegelevel studies. Aligned with MICAs Mission and Vision the program fosters a welcoming environment that supports students of all races ethnicities sexual orientations gender identities creative abilities religious beliefs political affiliations and socioeconomic backgrounds.

2025 Program Dates: Move In: June 20June 21 2025. Training: July 23July 27. Program Starts: June 30. Program Ends: July 25. Final Cleanup: July 26July 27 2025

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

This position reports to the PreCollege Program Manager and the Director of Youth Education in Open Studies. The Academic Coordinator is considered Professional Staff and is expected to live in residency on campus beginning one week before students arrive and throughout the duration of the program and will be provided with housing and a meal plan. The Academic Coordinator is expected to be in the residential hall and on call at least 3 days a week and uphold office hours 5 days a week for 5 hours each day for the duration of the program.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist program coordinators with facilitating training to undergraduate staff

  • Assist Faculty with syllabi and setting classroom expectations

  • Host Wednesday Faculty meetings

  • Work with the Program Manager/Coordinator to collect Faculty art material lists

  • Work with MICAs school store to schedule class visits for supply purchases

  • Schedule and order faculty instructional supplies for classes

  • Schedule and book 2 visiting artist talks from professional artists

  • Coordinate and work with appropriate offices to schedule models for painting and drawing classes

  • Answer questions and manage/resolve issues related to classroom facilities staffing and equipment

  • Assist in managing/resolving issues related to facilities submitting work orders for facility concerns

  • Make necessary paper copies for classes orientation and move in/out

  • Manage the coordinating of Faculty and student work installation for each sessions final exhibitions

  • Manage the coordinating of Baltimore field trips and events with the Community Coordinator

  • Attend planning student field trips on Saturdays

  • Manage required Sunday 125pm student studio time

  • Assist with the successful implementation of the PreCollege program with other coordinators. The variety of tasks associated with this position involve administrative clerical physical organizational and leadership skills

  • Acts as an ambassador for the program when appropriate

  • Assist Coordinators and program faculty to ensure the academic integrity and a safe and positive residential experience for PreCollege participants

  • Maintain an open line of communication and support for students and their families

  • Serve as liaison between Teaching Assistants Community Assistants the Program Coordinator faculty and Open Studies Staff

  • Work with the office of Open Studies the PreCollege Coordinator and Office of Residence Life to ensure a safe and positive residential experience for PreCollege participants.

  • Model and enforce PreCollege program policies rules and regulations

  • Provides supports interventions and referrals when appropriate for individual student needs

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful Background check and fingerprinting

  • Required to live on campus for duration of the program (room and board provided)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree; preferably in Fine Arts Art History Art Education or Arts Administration

  • Experience managing collegelevel staff

  • High school or college teaching experience preferred

  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with efficiency

  • Familiarity with campus resources

  • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality

Compensation:

  • Salary is commensurate with experience and college policy paid hourly $25 an hour for 40 hours a week for the duration of the program.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • Required training: Handbook orientation AntiHarassment Hazard Communication Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention Personal Protection Equipment.
