Under the direction of the Practice Manager the Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians nurse practitioners and nurses with evaluation management and treatment of patients during office visits and other tasks related to the visit consistent with his/her training and skills. His/her primary roles are to assure efficient patient flow through the office; to maintain neat clean and safe patient care areas and to promote patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional friendly manner consistent with their needs.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Crossed trained at the front desk to assist with phone calls appointment scheduling clinical messaging check in check out and other front desk duties
Reviews provider schedules daily and weekly to plan patient care and formulates solutions for potential problems
Communicates schedule changes with providers
Greets patient in waiting room and escorts to triage room and exam room
Assures efficient patient flow through the office triage room and exam rooms
Checks patients identification using 2 patient identifiers name DOB and/or MRN
Adheres to hand hygiene and standard precaution guidelines
Instructs patient how to prepare for the physician or nurse practitioner (assisting as necessary)
Anticipates / sets up special equipment and/or supplies needed for the visit
Alerts the physician or nurse practitioner when the patient is ready and communicates pertinent clinical information
Assists the physician or nurse practitioner with patient care during the visit
Assists patient through checkout process when visit is complete
Cleans and prepares room for next patient
Responds to needs to expedite visits and keep on schedule
Provides care appropriate to age group of patients in practice setting and documents data per practice protocols
Tests specimens as necessary:
h. Pylori breath test
stool for occult blood
Breath Lactose Test
Performs other tests procedures and treatments as needed
Download glucometers pumps and reports as needed
Assists physician or nurse practitioner with patient examination procedures and treatments as directed
Documents testing / results per practice protocols
Performs designated tasks related to tracking test results and may communicate normal test results to patients as directed by a physician nurse practitioner or nurse
Enters vitals and test results into LMR
Updates clinical paperwork as needed
Assists physicians nurse practitioner or nurses in coordinating care with / making referrals to community agencies for nonclinical services
Maintains neat clean and safe exam rooms and treatment areas
Assures exam treatment and clean utility rooms are properly stocked equipped and secured as applicable
Assures GI is adequately stocked with Infant Formula and tracks Formula arrival and dispensing.
Assures all equipment is in good working order
Cleans equipment exam rooms and triage room after patient use per office protocol
Promotes patient / customer satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional friendly manner consistent with their needs
Communicates appropriately and effectively with patient
Functions as in integral part of the patient care team
Interacts in a professional cooperative way with other practice staff
Accepts delegated responsibilities in a positive manner
Offers help to others in the practice when not busy
Before leaving the practice on breaks / lunch / shift makes sure adequate coverage is available
Engages in constructive problem solving with others in the practice as problems arise
Attends and participates in practice staff meetings
Performs all other duties assigned
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Knowledge of computer skills necessary including EPIC LMR Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office as required.
Exceptional organizational skills flexibility to manage multiple tasks with accuracy and attention to detail
Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
Excellent and effective interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and courteously with various groups of patients families support staff and providers

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ambulatory Care Setting
Medical Assistant certification required
Basic Life Support certification required
Associates degree preferred
Nursing Assistant certification or other academic preparation may be considered in lieu of Medical Assistant certification
