Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under minimal supervision and within established departmental and hospital policies and procedures is responsible for performing a range of experiments to investigate vascular function. Experiments will involve cells grown in culture and mouse or rat models. Responsibilities include maintaining cell culture systems; preparation of samples from animal tissue and cells grown in culture; manipulating DNA RNA and protein in vitro; and analysis of functional effects of expression of transfected genes in vivo and in cell culture systems. Will assist in the design and development of new assays and research protocols. Responsibilities include overseeing laboratory safety according to established HMS guidelines. Within budget constraints will order supplies and initiate equipment purchases. May participate in training other lab personnel although not in a traditional supervisory capacity. Will prepare reports and present data to other laboratory members in lab meetings. May also provide support to other related projects when needed.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsible for maintaining mammalian cells grown in culture treatments and sample preparations.

2. Performs analysis of RNA DNA and protein samples from animal tissue or cells (including Northern blot Southern blot Western blots enzyme assays).

3. Assists in the design and modification of assays and research protocols including those involving rodent models.

4. Orients and train new research fellows and lab assistants to lab procedures.
5. Maintains accurate records of all experiments compiles data and performs statistical analysis on results as required.

6. May initiate purchases of new supplies and equipment; maintains adequate supplies in lab.

7. Maintains laboratory safety records as necessary. Coordinates laboratory compliance with HMS safety guidelines in cooperation with principal investigator lab manager and the HMS safety office.

8. Preserves a clean and orderly work area and contributes to routine lab maintenance such as maintaining sterile and nonsterile supplies or other duties as assigned in cooperation with principal investigator.
QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelors degree in biological / physical sciences.

2. one year laboratory experience in a biomedical research laboratory.

3. Experience with one or more of the following: cell culture procedures protein analysis molecular biology.

4. Must be able to work with small animals.

5. Excellent record keeping ability to use Microsoft Excel and Word.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Some experiments will involve exposure to rodents recombinant DNA and may involve exposure to organic solvents and radioactive materials.
