Full time starting salary is normally in the range 36130 to 45413 with potential progression once in post to 48149. As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade7 salary 38249
Full Time Fixed Term contract up to November 2029

Role Summary
The NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) conducts highquality research in health protection. The Unit Manager supports the administrative and operational aspects of the HPRU ensuring smooth research activities and contributing to strategic goals.
The Unit Manager oversees the administrative and operational aspects of the NIHR HPRU including managing PhD students handling administrative tasks managing grant finances and ensuring compliance with regulations. The role involves close collaboration with researchers providing training and development and leading a small team.
Main Duties
Research Support and Administration
- Manage and support PhD students ensuring successful enrolment and satisfaction.
- Handle administrative tasks such as writing paperwork for NIHR and preparing reports.
- Manage grant finances including budgeting and financial tracking.
- Monitor and track research project progress within the HPRU.
- Collaborate with researchers to provide expert knowledge and support.
- Ensure compliance with health protection research regulations.
- Provide training and development opportunities for staff and students.
- Oversee the organisation and coordination of meetings workshops and seminars.
- Facilitate effective communication within the research unit and with external stakeholders.
- Supervise administrative tasks performed by the unit administrator
- Identify funding opportunities and disseminate them to academic colleagues.
- Support the preparation of research applications including budget information and administrative details.
- Manage the acceptance and setup of new awards from funders ensuring all documentation is complete.
- Ensure adherence to internal approval processes and due diligence for research proposals.
Operations and Administration
- Foster effective flexible and efficient administrative interfaces across the College(s) and University offices.
- Liaise with College process leads and peers to ensure timely delivery of services.
- Manage administrative processes ensuring they are robust flexible and effective.
- Review processes and systems regularly to ensure efficiency and compliance with University practices.
- Offer specialist advice about University systems policies and regulations.
- Work with external suppliers and funders to ensure timely resolution of enquiries.
- Evaluate service provision and implement innovative solutions to improve quality and efficiency.
- Prepare and present reports proposals and papers for stakeholders and senior meetings.
- Nurture good working relationships to ensure effective communication of College initiatives.
- Support the delivery of change projects planning and ensuring delivery within set timescales.
Management and Leadership
- Linemanage a member of staff and take responsibility for coordinating and prioritising their work
- Report updates to the School Head of Operations/Head of School/Project Lead in the ongoingdevelopment of the unit.
- Represent the Unit and contribute to working groups/committees at local and international levels
- Contribute to local and international research management initiatives.
- Coach and encourage staff in a supportive environment.
- Manage the HR processes for existing staff and applicants.
- Deliver training and support to staff within the unit.
- Promote professional development opportunities for staff.
Other Duties

- Undertake other tasks as applicable to the role and grade of the post.
Required Knowledge Skills Qualifications Experience
- Degree level education (or equivalent) plus relevant practical experience.
- Significant experience in Research Administration or Higher Education administration and/or management.
- Experience managing professional services staff to achieve high standards.
- Excellent leadership and management skills.
- High degree of initiative resourcefulness and flexibility.
- Strong analytical and problemsolving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
- Knowledge of project and change management resource planning and financial management.
- Understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and commitment to equality and fairness.
