Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.

Position Summary:

The Medical Assistant is responsible for supporting the Wound Care Centers outpatient services under the direct supervision of the Clinic Director. He/she has primary responsibility for maintaining efficient patient flow greeting patients preparing the patient for the appointment with the clinician assisting with procedures and performing wound care and various clinical tasks as instructed by a licensed clinician. The Medical Assistant will also be responsible for maintaining patient rooms and common clinic areas (i.e. setting up cleaning up and stocking) as well as ordering and tracking supplies for the practice.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility major job duties special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

  1. Assist clinicians by:
    1. Setting up exam rooms for patients
    2. Greeting patients coming in for appointments
    3. Escorting patients to exam rooms
    4. Preparing patients for exams
    5. Anticipating the need for those requiring patient education
    6. Maintaining patient flow

2. Perform wound care as directed:

a. Remove dressing

b. Clean wounds

c. Measure wounds

d. Redress wounds

e. Photograph wounds

3. Performs various procedures such as:

a. Take vital signs

b. Wound cultures

c. Suture staple and drain removal

4. Assists the clinical staff with procedures as needed such as:

a. Debridements

b. Aspirations

5. Tracks and orders all necessary supplies.

6. Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment following infection control guidelines.

7. Clean and maintain the sterilizer as required by the manufacturer and Infection Control.

8. Transports patients specimens and supplies to other areas of the hospital as needed.

9. Perform patient education under direction of a licensed clinician.

10. Maintains excellent customer service.

11. Act as a backup to the Medical Assistant working in the Ambulatory Treatment Room as necessary.

12. Performs all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic neither overstated nor understated and related to the essential functions of the job.

  1. High school diploma required.
  2. Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant certification program or 6 months toa year relevant clinical experience in a healthcare setting or currently graduated/enrolled in a nursing allied health or clinical program preferred.
  3. BA/BS highly degree preferred.
  4. One year of clinical experience in an Ambulatory setting preferred.
  5. Must be OSHA CLIA and HIPAA knowledgeable.
  6. May not currently hold a valid nursing license.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: (MUST be realistic neither overstated nor understated and related to the essential functions of the job.

  1. Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills to interact with physician nurses and hospital personnel under stressful situations.
  2. Selfmotivated with strong communication and customer service skills.
  3. Strong clinical judgment.
  4. Good organizational skills required to prioritize tasks effectively.
  5. Able to work successfully as part of a team.
  6. Able to interact with ill patients and families to elicit desired responses to treatment and allay apprehensions.
  7. Mechanical aptitude to understand and operate complex equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.

Wound Care Center with 4 examination rooms reception desk waiting area office storage areas and sterilizing/work room.

The hours of the ATR/WCC are 7:30AM to 4:00PM. In order to ensure adequate setup and cleanup time the Medical Assistant is expected to work a shift from 7:30 AM 4:00 PM with a lunch break from 12:00 PM 12:30 PM.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: List the number of FTEs supervised.

None.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: Indicate financial scope information i.e.: size of budget volume revenue etc.

None.
