Description / Position Overview

Senior Fleet Technician

Reporting to the Fleet Supervisor you will be maintaining and repairing fire apparatus heavy equipment lightduty trucks a variety of passenger vehicles firefighting tools and equipment as needed. The Colorado Springs Fire Department fleet includes powertrains by Cummins Ford and others to a lesser extent. The expectation for this role is to perform at a master craftsman level mentoring and teaching junior colleagues on inspections running diagnostics ordering parts and performing repairs. The ideal candidate will have advanced skills and abilities in diagnostics of mechanical systems.

Essential Job Functionsthe basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and vehicles
  • Inspect diagnose and isolate defective missing or malfunctioning components of mechanical hydraulic fueling electrical and pneumatic systems
  • Identify record and source parts
  • Coordinate service writing and parts acquisition with supervisor
  • Use software to initiate record and track fleet work
  • Guide and mentor colleagues on mechanical methods and processes
  • Be on call one week out of every six
Knowledge of:
  • Diesel and gas engine technologies
  • Standards including but not limited to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) manufacturer specifications Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines
  • Proper usage of hand electric pneumatic and hydraulic tools and other specialty equipment
  • Be well versed in the operational characteristics of a variety of diesel and gas technologies chassis drivetrain lighting and cab systems to include environmental control systems.
Ability to:
  • Be a pace setter for production by motivating and collaborating with team members
  • Perform upfit fabrication and make repairs metal components using welding techniques.
  • Perform detailed diagnostic testing with a variety of methods to include the use of modern scan tools
  • Perform mobile maintenance and repair functions as needed
  • Communicate clearly and concisely to customers staff supervisors and vendors. Communication methods include interpersonal telephone computerbased programs and in writing

Technicians are required to wear appropriate safety personal protective equipment and work in a shop environment around vehicles and heavy equipment with exposure to noise dust grease smoke fumes and gases. You will have manual and physical dexterity with the ability to sit stand and walk for extended periods and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Minimum Qualifications

One 1 year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one 1 year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.

Physical Demands: Exerting 50100 lbs. occasionally; 1025 lbs. frequently; or up to 1020 lbs. constantly.
