QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelors Degree with a concentration in a human relations field (i.e. Sociology Psychology) highly preferable.
2. Must be a Certified Sign Language Interpreter.
3. Satisfactory fluency in English and target language at a level that ensures accurate and understandable interpretation. Good writing skills in English.
4. Hospital and/or health care related experience in a position of direct patient contact preferable.
5. Must have knowledge of medical terminology basic anatomy physiology and diagnostic procedures and treatments.

1. Strong ability to concentrate detail oriented and possess culturally sensitive care and underlying issue regarding their patient as well as transmit all information as accurately as possible.
2. Strong interpersonal skills in situations that are very difficult and demanding.
3. Must have excellent organizational skills in order to evaluate relative needs and set priorities problemsolving skills and ability to meet deadlines.
4. Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision.
5. Standing and walking required 95 of time. Able to work effectively in fastpaced highpressure environment.

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT
Responsible for assessing the needs of deaf and hard of hearing patients and providing assistance by interpretation of consent forms diagnoses discharge plans and any other type of patientrelated information. Independently resolves most issues that arise in their daily responsibilities answers questions about protocols and makes appropriate referrals without direct supervision. Complies with appropriate BWH policies and procedures particularly all policies related to patient care services. ALL BWH EMPLOYEES ARE EXPECTED TO WORK WITHIN LEGAL
REGULATORY AND ETHICAL PRACTICE STANDARDS.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1 Responsible for immediately and effectively answering requests for interpretation throughout the hospital with a priority for emergency and more urgent requests. Responsible to arrive on time to the appointments and to provide services from the point of entry throughout discharge.
2 Interprets and transmits accurately and in understandable terms complex medical information from medical providers to patients including interpretation of consent forms diagnoses during medical procedures discharge plans and any other type of patientrelated information. Interprets and transmits accurately and in understandable terms information from patients to medical providers.
3 Assists patients and clinical providers throughout the hospital system in a
professional and courteous manner. Provides the highest quality of service at each appointment to every Deaf and Hard of Hearing patient and if necessary refers the patient to the appropriate resource. Enables the BWH community to better meet the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients.
4 Seeks evaluation certification and additional training in interpreting health care practices and beliefs and cultural differences.
5 Maintains an environment that promotes collaborative work relationships and provides assistance to the BWH Interpreter Services personnel to perform office related task as needed. If necessary as part of a team assists in recruitment training and mentoring of volunteers and personnel of target
language.
6 The interpreter accepts and processes properly the assignments for his/her language. This task may include following office protocol logging information properly contacting patients and informing the BWH Interpreter Department of any changes in a timely manner.
7 Independently resolves most issues that arise in their daily responsibilities answer questions make appropriate referrals and performs duties without direct supervision.
8 Maintains complete and accurate written records of services rendered and statistics of all patient related information.
9 Performs related duties as required.
