The purpose of this position is to provide adult and pediatric phlebotomy service to the outpatientsserved by the OHSU Hospital and Clinics and Doernbecher Childrens Hospital and providesCoagulation testing for the outpatients served by the Center for Health and Healing 2 Laboratory. Thisperson also provides support services to the phlebotomy team by ordering laboratory tests eitherfrom the hospital information system (HIS) or directly into the laboratory information system (LIS).This person works closely with the Phlebotomy team and others in the department to ensureimmediate courteous and comprehensive responses to requests for service or concerns aboutspecimens and related matters. This person maintains a professional and customer service orientedfocus at all times. The employee in this position promotes OHSUs mission statement by deliveringhigh quality cost effective familyoriented service. All tasks and duties are performed with supportand oversight by the Phlebotomy Management Team. This position helps to create a collaborative
environment by integrating education research and clinical leadership.
Outpatient Specimen Collection and Processing
Collects specimens from outpatients using approved specimen collection methods. This includes following the policies andprocedures as found in the Phlebotomy Procedure Manual on theMCN Policy site.
Assists coworkers as needed.
Greets patients and interacts in a professional courteous manner.
Correctly identifies patients using two patient identifiers.
Performs venipuncture using approved procedures on adult andpediatric patients.
Labels tubes with patient present.
Ensures timely transportation to lab of all collected specimens.
Clerical and Customer Service Functions
Answers multiline telephone aids with clarifying orders notifyingclinics and providers of specimen problems. etc.
Communicates clearly and accurately with staff and patients
Does whatever is reasonably necessary to meet the needs of thecustomers.
Interacts with all other professional staff in a courteous and helpful manner.
Demonstrates high level customer service to both internal andexternal customers by timely responsiveness to customer needsincluding acting at all times to ensure client satisfaction throughpositive interaction excellent telephone and face to facecommunication skills timely handling of specimens and paperworkand thorough problemsolving.

Job Related KnowledgeSkills and Abilities(Competencies):
This position will serve the CHH Laboratory at OHSU Commons at the South Waterfront. The openingand closing hours of this position rotate among phlebotomy staff and may change according to clinicneeds including coverage in the Physicians Pavilion Outpatient Clinic. Positions in the laboratory andenvirons may require working flexible schedules including nights weekends and holidays; working atmultiple laboratory or hospital sites; traveling between laboratories and sites by stairs elevator tramshuttle or other means; exposure to blood and body fluids chemical hazards radiation; working in asomewhat noisy and crowded environment; wearing gloves and other Personal Protective Equipmentfor long periods of time; experiencing occasional temperature control fluctuations in buildings.
