Job Description

Note: This position is one involving safetysensitive job duties under Bixby Telephone Companys Alcohol & DrugFree Workplace Policy.


I. POSITION SUMMARY:

Install maintain and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic networks by testing splicing and implementing splice connections in the field.


II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Splice buried and aerial fiber optic cables and lines for installations reconfigurations and restorations.
  • Terminate network and distribution fiber optic cables to network terminals.
  • Identifies counts and prepares groups of pairs for splicing.
  • Open and close field enclosures securely and operate lift equipment to access installed cables.
  • Follow maps cutsheets and other instructions to execute splicing jobs.
  • Update field copy of construction plans and assignment sheets for as built records.
  • Enforce security and data integrity of all company systems including timecards project management and mapping systems.
  • Maintains and repairs cable plant (copper and fiber optic) by using test equipment to locate and isolate trouble locations.
  • Operate and administer maintenance for necessary equipment including bucket trucks splicing trailers test equipment splice machines and other specialty tools.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by supervisors.



Requirements

III. EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Postsecondary degree or technical accreditations preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience working in telephone plant operations preferred.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to see and manipulate individual fiber optic strands.
  • Ability to communicate with coworkers and business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of state and federal (OSHA) safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of voice communications and digital technology.
  • Knowledge of company products and services.
  • Skill in operating service equipment including splicing materials pedestals marking materials cable reel trailers and various hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and motorized equipment appropriate for the job position.
  • Skill in reading cable schematics fiber count reports and verification reports.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps staking sheets and operating and maintenance instruction manuals.
  • Ability to work in systems to maintain mapping and assignment information and to retrieve data base information for analysis and reports.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions using information at hand.
  • Ability to effectively function as a team player.

IV. LICENSE:

Valid Oklahoma Drivers License is required.

CDL Class A preferred.


V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Seeing Must be able to see well enough to read service orders and trouble reports colors of fiber: 75100
  • Hearing Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with employees and business contacts: 75100
  • Standing/Walking Must be able to move about the work site: 75100
  • Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling Must be able to climb stoop kneel and crawl to perform installations: 75100
  • Lifting/Pulling/Pushing Must be able to lift at least 75 lbs.: 75100
  • Fingering/Grasping/Feeling Must be able to write type and use phone system: 75100

VI. WORKING CONDITIONS:

This factor measures the surroundings or physical conditions under which a job must be done and the extent to which those conditions make the job pleasant or less agreeable. Consider the local climate and or weather conditions along with the presence and relative amount of exposure to dust dirt heat fumes contaminants cold noise vibration wetness etc.


This position requires a great deal of exposure to the outdoors which varies greatly on a daily basis based on the climate and weather patterns of Oklahoma. In addition to working outdoors this position may require exposure to attics and crawl spaces which introduce exposure to other external variables which can be uncomfortable. This position may require exposure to heavy machinery and industrial equipment which can greatly affect the pleasantness of the employees work environment.
