GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the supervision of the Principal the Specialty Center Coordinator provides instructional leadership and oversees the operation of a high school Specialty Center responsible for the organization and structure of the program. The coordinator is responsible for recruiting students into the program and supporting their academic success.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversees program structure curriculum and personnel
- Provides program direction and supervision to this specialty center. Provides leadership in promoting choices for students in pursuing courses of study appropriate to their special talents and interests.
- Coordinates staffing needs with the principal; recommends staffing changes; participates in recruiting selecting and assigning the centers staff.
- Assists the administrative team in selecting supervising and developing the centers faculty and support staff.
- Provides leadership and direction to the center teachers and support staff; reviews and analyzes data to lead the centers efforts in achieving high academic performance of all students.
- Collaborates with the principal on budget preparation; monitors specialty center budget and record of expenditures; approves spending. Identifies funding sources to address specialty center needs. Ensures compliance with fiscal guidelines.
- Seeks grant funding to enhance and support new initiatives.
- Communicates policy procedures and guidelines to the school staff. Interprets school board policy procedures and guidelines to parents and public. Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes policy and guidelines related to public schools and institutional policies of related organizations.
- Serves as a member of the school leadership team and represents the center at meetings conferences hearings and other public forums; gathers business and community parental input. Works with committees of teachers business alliances and organizations in specific programs.
- Provides coordination and supervision in partnership with the curriculum specialists and central staff for curriculum design course selection course offerings staff selection curriculum writing and material/textbook selection and ordering.
- Makes recommendations and assists in developing and revising existing or implementation of new policies.
- Serves as a school system representative to the community.
Oversees student selection and monitors program effectiveness
- Coordinates with school counselors to direct and support center students in the scheduling process.
- Communicates educational opportunities of the Specialty Center including conducting orientations open houses and countywide curriculum fairs.
- Prepares and edits brochures and other publications. Works with the Office of Communications the principal and the director of high schools on public relations as it applies to the center.
- Consistently evaluates program effectiveness. Assess/Monitor student learning. Work with curriculum specialists to identify student achievement measures professional development and community outreach.
- Coordinates student selection and notification.
- Prepares regular reports related to the instructional program operations of the center and progress of students.
Serves as lead specialty center instructor
- Provides classroom instruction: Plans and delivers appropriate curriculum using division curriculum. Assesses students learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group and individual needs. Maintains order within the classroom in accordance with division guidelines regarding student behavior management. Supervises students during nonclassroom times (lunch fire drills etc..
- Attends extracurricular/cocurricular Specialty Center/school events.
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
- Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
- Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Extensive knowledge of instructional and internship program planning total high school operation and group dynamics.
- Considerable knowledge of: federal and state regulations relative to areas of responsibility and the ability to interpret and apply the regulations; the concepts principles and methodologies of instruction; of academic curriculum for assigned classes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals to design and deliver instruction and to assess students learning and in decisionmaking problem analysis conflict resolution interpersonal relationships long range planning and forecasting and the ability to communicate effectively.
- Bachelors degree Masters degree preferred from an accredited college or university required with major or concentration in a relevant field.
- Valid Virginia Postgraduate Professional License or eligibility for the same an endorsement in administration and supervision preferred.
- Three 3 years of successful fulltime experience as a schoolbased administrator preferred; substantial experience as a teacher counselor or central office coordinator of administrator may be considered

WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work environment is primarily inside with moderate noise temperatures that are controlled and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
- The work is light work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
