Job Summary:

Location: Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital
Address: 933 E. Pierce St. Council Bluffs IA

Work Schedule:MondayFriday including every third Weekend holidays and on call rotation. Hospital Experience preferred.

Collect and preserve blood samples and certain other body fluids for analysis.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions

1. Performs duties of a Phlebotomist to assist in the daily workload by performing assigned tasks.

  • Assists in daily workload.
  • Compliant per PPE guidelines.
  • Performs basic dermal heel stick (if applicable to location) and venipuncture collection.
  • Performs specimen processing (if applicable to location).
  • Lab Phlebotomy: Performs arterial blood gas collection or bone marrow assists or phlebotomy clerk duties.
  • Maintains compliance with established processes: turnaround time expectations collecting and handling specimens proper documentation of sample collection.
  • Accommodates patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties schedules and staffing.

2. Document orientation training and education to ensure employee competence provide excellent services and meet accreditation requirements by effective verbal or written communication.

  • Organizational and department competencies are completed 100 of the time.
  • Evidence that new procedures and procedure revisions are read and understood.
  • Infusion Center: Assists in training new and existing staff including the review and completion of orientation checklists and skills training checklists.

3. Communicates efficiently by answering telephones taking messages and forwarding information or calls to appropriate staff.

  • Identifies problems and initiates immediate followup as necessary with Leadership or designee to ensure accurate timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Appropriate communication skill as directly observed by Leadership or designee.
  • Phone calls are acted upon promptly and handled in a professional manner per the customer service protocol as directly observed.

4. Participates in Continuing Education.

  • Completes required annual Continuing Education hours.

Job Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent required.
  • Participates in mandatory inservices and continuing education programs as mandated by policies and procedures accrediting agencies and as directed by Leadership.


Experience

Six months to one year minimum Phlebotomy experience that qualifies for American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or approved equivalent certification eligibility required

Laboratory & Diabetes & Endocrine Lab: Experience in the following areas required:

  • Routine venipuncture.
  • AND
  • Routine dermal puncture.

Infusion Center: Experience in the following area required:

  • Specimen processing.

Lab Phlebotomy: Required:

  • Routine Venipuncture
  • Routine Dermal Puncture
  • Infant Heel Puncture (if required by work location)

Lab Phlebotomy: Experience in one of the following areas required:

  • Arterial blood gas collection
  • OR
  • Specimen processing
  • OR
  • Phlebotomy Clerk

License/Certifications

  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification or approved equivalent certification required within 18 months from date of hire to maintain employment.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Requires strong attention to detail.
  • Requires occasional projects and assignments/participation.
  • In the Infusion Center department requires mentoring students and new employees.
  • Willing to adjust schedule/shift and pick up open shifts to meet patient needs
