Pharmacy interns are required to work an average of 1015 hours/week during the school year with an opportunity to work a larger number of hours during the summertime on various projects or extra staffing within the outpatient pharmacy. Pharmacy Intern Outpatient/Ambulatory Pharmacy (P1 or P2 Interns available to apply) The Outpatient/Ambulatory Pharmacy Intern position exists to allow for the growth development and education of students enrolled in The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. The interns further the mission of the pharmacy department by caring for patients while enhancing their educational experience and developing good customer service skills. Pharmacy interns are required to work an average of 1015 hours/week during the school year with an opportunity to work a larger number of hours during the summertime. The intern is expected to engage in professional development activities and meetings as designated by the interns assigned supervisor. During our progressive fouryear program each experience builds upon your education and skills with exciting new opportunities. Summers are spent growing and developing your future pharmacist skills set through extensive training professional projects presentations and shadowing various pharmacists. Essential Functions:
- Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of and compliance with USP 795 and 800 standards and other regulatory requirements which allow safe and accurate preparation and/or compounding of hazardous and nonhazardous nonsterile products (both oral and topical) including reconstitution when applicable.
- Completes intern projects and assignments throughout the year: Opportunities include but are not limited to topic discussions journal clubs clinical rotations and case presentations research projects and presentations professional development activities internspecific competitions simulation center participation.
- Dispenses medication and counsels caregivers on the medication. Manages dispensing information through the computer system including the patients profiles. Reviews patients profiles before dispensing medication for possible medication complications and takes appropriate action to correct problems. Complies with OBRA90 regulations.
- Extemporaneously compounds medications which are not commercially available (i.e. suspensions ointments etc. for both inpatient and outpatient use.
- Accepts prescriptions establishes billing/patient charge documents patients allergies correctly interprets and enters outpatient prescription into the computer.
- Assists pharmacists in processing new medication orders and answering phones. Provides accurate safe effective handoff to patients and caregivers by providing counseling and education with all dispensed medication in the outpatient pharmacy.
- Must exhibit excellent customer service skills.
- Utilizes math and problem solving skills (i.e. algebra) to calculate amount of drug needed for preparation of prescriptions.
- Provides drug information to health care professionals patients and parents; instructs patient/parent on correct use of selfadministered medications.
- Maintains drug records required by Federal State and Local authorities.
- Replenishes pharmacy stock area and notifies pharmacist of any problems or concerns.
Education Requirement:
Actively enrolled in an accredited College of Pharmacy.
Licensure Requirement:
Eligible for a State Board of Pharmacy Intern License.
