Job Description

  • 70: Conduct Multilingual Communication Consultations
  • Facilitate and foster student learning by asking questions collaborating with students during consultations and teaching important writing and speaking strategies and concepts
  • Work with multilingual students who prefer to speak in their home language and may be working on writing in English or another language
  • Support students taking KU language courses which may include tutoring in grammar and vocabulary as well as writing skills in the language
  • Contribute to the creation of a welcoming and collaborative environment for learning

  • 15: Provide Additional Writing Center Services
  • Lead writing workshops and assist with marketing events
  • Develop resources like handouts workshops and videos
  • Facilitate undergraduate or graduate programming as appropriate such as writing groups writeins or coaching

  • 10: Participate in Professional Development
  • Participate in preservice training and ongoing education trainings and professional development
  • Participate in committees and special projects bringing your ideas interests and skills to expand the collective knowledge and abilities of the Wingspan

Work Schedule
The Wingspan is located in Anschutz Library on the KU Lawrence campus and shifts are scheduled between 9 am7 pm MondayThursday 9 am5 pm Friday and 26 pm Sunday. The schedule is dependent on needs and consultant availability.

  1. Fluency in at least one language other than English as demonstrated through writing sample and interview
  2. Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and at least one other language as evidenced in application materials and interview
  3. A commitment to the improvement of ones own writing and professional development as a consultant as demonstrated in application materials and/or interview
  4. Willingness to work in multiple modalities (inperson videoconference or asynchronous)
  5. During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1 have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2 be preenrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3 be enrolled in summer session or 4 be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students.(Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Position Overview
Unit Overview:
KUs Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support offers a portfolio of collaborative innovative academic support programs and services to students faculty and staff. The Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program Supplemental Instruction (SI) program Learning and Tutoring Services and Writing Center Services. The Wingspan is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC) a comprehensive student support program consisting of two unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas. UASC supports the Universitys commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom support academic and personal development and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Affairs.

Position Overview:

Multilingual writing consultants are peer educators who meet oneonone with students in person and online to discuss writing projects in a variety of disciplines and genres. They are open to working with KU undergraduate and/or graduate students in English and at least one other language. This work may include supporting students taking language courses at KU speaking to students in their language of choice about writing in English or assisting with writing in multiple languages. Multilingual consultants collaborate with students at any point in the writing and languagelearning process; teach strategies for speaking researching drafting organizing revising and editing; and direct students to resources. They also support other Writing Center Services programming like workshops writing groups and resource development.

Consultants should have the ability to work at least 8 hours per week including some evening and weekend availability and are required to work inperson on the Lawrence campus.
