The Statewide Services and Outreach (SSO) division of the Ohio Deaf and Blind Education Services (ODBES) provides programs and services in the students home district at the Ohio School for the Deaf the Ohio State School for the Blind and through webbased technologies for schools and families throughout the state.
ODBES Statewide Services and Outreach focuses on the following areas:

Must maintain valid Ohio teaching licensure for grade level subject area or special class assignment.
Must demonstrate Superior level on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) at hire.
American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) Qualified or Professional certification preferred;Provisional required within 1 year of hire.
B.A B.S. in ASL Teaching Deaf Education or a related field required. (M.A. M.S. preferred).
Experience in teaching ASL at the K12 and/or college level preferred.

Provides American Sign Language (ASL)/Deaf Culture assessment and facilitates and/or advises on appropriate interventions for students professionals families throughout the state of Ohio.
Provides assessments of American Sign Language for students educators and professionals:
Evaluates ASL competencies of students with the Statewide Services & Outreach Division (SSO) to support documentation districts can use for writing an Evaluation Team Report (ETR) or Individualized Education Plan (IEP); prepares reports and develops language recommendations based on evaluations and progress monitoring; administers checklists of communication and language skills; provides individualized intervention focusing on ASL development need areas identified by formal evaluations; provides Leadership for Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) Programming; coordinates the Sign Language Proficiency Interview for requests from across Ohio for professionals in Ohio Public Schools and agencies licensed personnel Staff at the Ohio School for the Deaf and families; participates in postassessment meetings and provides feedback for school districts and statewide services; assists with professional development for SLPI team in assessment procedures; maintains strict confidentiality regarding assessments.
Builds and implements programming for SSO:
Implements programming for online learning opportunities for students across Ohio; provides leadership/support to the team in creating content and building the online coursework for programming; creates registration tools for students to enroll in online coursework; supports the team to create assessment tools for online coursework.
Supports technology for SSO:
Assists in website development including content creation; supports continued education around accessible technology tools for the Deaf/Hard of hearing/Deafblind communities; works with SSO Division to support content for social media platforms sharing information relevant to the field; brings innovative ideas for additional technology based programming to serve students and professionals in Ohio.
Leads American Sign Language (ASL) Online Classes:
Teaches in ASL (preference given to the ability to teach ASL 3 & ASL 4 classes/advanced ASL course work) to students in an online platform for school districts across Ohio; reviews curriculum to provide ideas to SSO leadership for program implementation; works effectively with the ASL Online Team for creation of online course curriculum at a high level; creates course content to support program innovation for online course work; supports SSO leadership in building class schedules for ASL Online courses for school districts in Ohio.
Develops ASL and Deaf Culture skills of students educators and families:
Provides and arranges workshops and educational opportunities for faculty parents and school districts statewide on ASL and Deaf Culture; provides consultation to Ohio educators regarding signs for content areas; acts as part of a team to recommend or develop appropriate curriculum teacher resource guides assessments materials and equipment.
Disseminates information regarding ASL and Deaf Culture:
Compiles resources and materials; provides information and resources; provides career awareness information related to Deaf Education to groups and individuals; participates in staff development activities and other duties as assigned.
Maintains knowledge:
Keeps abreast of educational trends affecting deaf and nondeaf students and first and second language learners in ASL; attends professional workshops seminars and/or courses; meets ASLTA certification requirements.
Assists Statewide Services and Outreach in serving districts students and families across Ohio.
